When Red goes to church, he hears the man up in the pulpit rail against the taboo of incest, and even though he cannot understand much of the complicated language in Leviticus, he knows enough to know that perhaps what he is doing with Father isnt. Quite. Right.
Afterwards, he chooses not to ask, because the mans wild arm ravings and calls of fire and brimstone have frightened him.
He goes home, and asks Father if they should stop?
Father looks him in the eyes, and asks him if he wants to.
Red doesnt. If he is honest, he will admit that he likes being with Father in all ways, and Father takes care of him so it is not so difficult to think that Father would take care of him in bed too.
This way, he never has to deal with heartbreak.
So he says no, and Father holds him close.
It does not really change anything. Red now knows, but to be truthful, he knows but does not care, and that changes everything. They still dance in the starlight and fly with the dragons and spend their vacations together cuddling amongst silken sheets.
The difference is now that Red knows he is a sinner.
He doesnt care.
As long as he has Father with him, nothing else matters.
