In his own way, Lance is pure. Hes absolutely devoted to the duty he must perform, and he obeys no matter the consequences. Others may brand him faithless and murderer and hypocrite, but he doesnt care. As long as the one whom he loves does not reject him, he holds his head up and carries on. His honor is his shield, and his heart is pure, for devotion to a cause is pure worship, is it not?
Red likes Lance, because he recognizes that single-minded heart, and it isnt because Lance is hot or powerful. He just wants to be assured of safety. Neither of them are players, so theyll stay true to each other, and keep their relationship untainted with adultery. Theres no point in cheating when youre with the one you love, and love can cover a multitude of faults. Red has enough experience to know that, hes had enough of flings with giggling fangirls and hes really not happy with the way things have turned out.
So he wont cheat on Lance, and hes sure Lance wont cheat on him, and Lance promises him, the first night they make love. He kisses Red then, and whispers that hes such a beautiful innocent child, but hell teach him what to do and Red complies eagerly.
Pure happiness is being with the one you love, forever.
So theyll stay together, and Red will stay pure, because Lance will shield him from corruption, and ward him from danger, and cover his eyes to the dark underbelly of the League system, and Red will let him, because he doesnt mind. After all, he has to represent hope, and hope must not become disgusted at how dirty the world really is.
And somehow, their relationship works just like that.
