The Big Dig 2004

Wascana lake is a big significant to our province because we know have a clean and safe lake to swim in. In this report you will find how much money they had to dig the lake, what equipment they used and much more. After you read this I hope you also will think it was a huge significance to you.

Questions

1. When did they start to dig the lake and when did they finish the dig. How much money they had to dig the lake?

2. What type equipment did they use.

3. What were their up and downs with weather.

4. How many people helped and volunteered?

5. What are their finishing touches and what did they ass that wasn't  there before?

In the fall of 2003, Saskatchewan Property Management Corporation worked with the design and engineering. On Jan.6th they started digging the lake and they finishined  Nov.2004removing about 1,327,600 cubic squared of dirt from the bottom of the lake . They also has 18 million dollars to dig the lake. Government gave $ 9 million, Province of Saskatchewan gave $ 5 million and the city of Regina gave an amazing job.

There were 22 rock trucks and 13 of them were big trucks, and 9 track hoes to scoop up all the dirt. The trucks can go as fast as 45 kilometers per hour. A huge bucket can fill a truck up in two scoops. Approximately 3.5 million liters of fuel was used  to a cost of about $2.2 million dollars. The rock trucks made up to 157,000 on way trips, amounting to 1,012,000 kill. The haul to the farthest fill area was approximately 4.6 kilometers.

The first blizzard during the dig was on Jan.30th. Blowing snow and visibility problems was on Feb.10th. Warm weather caused  a sticky lake bed causing productivity slow down on Feb.24th. As the dig was at home stretch, The third week in March in rained . Other wise the weather was good. The 24/7 operation was shut down three times because of the weather.

There were 25 that were working here on the concrete end of it for Bomion Construction. There was 162 people doing Broda Construction. 34 people doing Dominion Construction. There was 92 people here working for Broda driving trucks and doing what ever has to be done. In total for all the people who help has about 2,000 people and they did a very good job!

I can't wait to go and see what they are going to work on. Also there are going to be doing the summer games and other things. What I found that was really interesting was that in some places the water was only a foot deep. So good thing they dug the lake. So we know have a clean and safe lake to swim and have the summer games in the lake. So good job to all the people who help and were involved in the Big Dig 2004!!
