Lesson 2 - Vowels

Last lesson you learnt all the letters of the arabic alphabet. This lesson you will be given an introduction to some of the voewls in the arabic language.

Unlike english, where vowles are entirely seperate letters (a,e,i,o and u), arabic uses small signs fixed above or below a letter to give it an additional sound. As mentioned in the previous lesson, the letters in the arabic alphabet do not really make a particular sound unless they are combined with other letters to form a word, and/or if they have vowelling added to them. Firstly lets look at the 3 vowels, Fat'ha, Kasra and Domma.

The 3 Vowels

There are 3 main vowels in written arabic which will alter the sound of the letter they are added to. They are:

Fat'ha = = gives a letter an "a" sound. For example:

"a"

"ba"

"ja"

Kasra = = gives a letter an "e" sound. For example:

"e"

"be"

"je"

Domma = = gives a letter an "oo" sound. For example:

"oo"

"boo"

"joo"
