Lesson 2 - Vowels
Last lesson you learnt all the
letters of the arabic alphabet. This lesson you will
be given an introduction to some of the voewls in the
arabic language.
Unlike english, where vowles
are entirely seperate letters (a,e,i,o and u), arabic
uses small signs fixed above or below a letter to
give it an additional sound. As mentioned in the
previous lesson, the letters in the arabic alphabet
do not really make a particular sound unless they are
combined with other letters to form a word, and/or if
they have vowelling added to them. Firstly lets look
at the 3 vowels, Fat'ha, Kasra and Domma.
The 3 Vowels
There are 3 main vowels in
written arabic which will alter the sound of the
letter they are added to. They are:
Fat'ha = = gives a letter an
"a" sound. For example:
Kasra
= = gives a
letter an "e" sound. For example:
Domma = = gives a letter an
"oo" sound. For example:
