BLISS CHARLES;

son of Solomon & Susanna (Charles) Charles [See family of Solomon

Charles];

born 5 November 1810, in Fryeburg, ME;

died 30 November 1891, in Chatham; buried at Eastman/Charles Cem.,

No. Chatham;

married, 17 December 1835:

SARAH AMES;

daughter of Stephen & Lydia (Head) Ames of Stow, ME;

born 10 January 1817, probably in Epsom, NH;

died 13 December 1907, in Chatham; buried at Eastman/Charles Cem.,

No. Chatham.

Bliss was a farmer and settled on the state line, about two miles

south of his parents, adjacent to the Eastman/Charles Cemetery. His

dwelling house was in Chatham, but his stable and barn were in Stow, ME.

This homestead was later taken over by his son, John Flint Charles.

Bliss served several years as Chatham town treasurer and selectman, and

was a representative to the State Legislature in 1847-48.

Ten children of Bliss & Sarah (Ames) Charles, all born in Chatham, as

(1) LYDIA AMES CHARLES, dau. of Bliss & Sarah, b. 29 March 1837; d. 25

Nov. 1873; m., 23 Sept. 1862, her twice first cousin, BENJAMIN E. CHARLES

(b. 22 Feb. 1827; d. 1895), son of Russell & Melinda (Ames) Charles.

(2) JOHN FLINT CHARLES, son of Bliss & Sarah, b. 1 Nov. 1839; d. 7 July

1918, in Chatham; buried with wife at Hillcrest Cem., Stow, ME; m., 8

July 1866, in Bridgton, ME, ELIZABETH ANN WALKER (b. 28 May 1838, in

Stow; d. 20 Oct. 1934, at No. Chatham), dau. of William C. & Esther

(Abbott) Walker of Stow. They lived first at North Fryeburg, ME, where

John was listed in the 1870 census as a dry goods merchant, and in 1880

as a farmer. They moved to the Bliss Charles homestead at North Chatham

on Dec. 31, 1883, where they lived the remainder of their lives. John

served many years as Chatham town treasurer. Four children, as follows:

(2.1) SUSIE W. CHARLES, dau. of John F. & Elizabeth, b. 19 March 1869,

in Fryeburg, ME; d. 23 March 1954; buried with parents at Hillcrest Cem.,

Stow, ME. Susie was a school teacher most of her adult life. Never

married.

(2.2) NEDDIE W. CHARLES, son of John F. & Elizabeth, b. 28 Nov. 1871; d.

22 March 1872; buried with parents at Hillcrest Cem., Stow, ME.

(2.3) FRED F. CHARLES, son of John F. & Elizabeth, b. 17 Aug. 1874, in

Fryeburg, ME; d. 30 March 1935; buried with wife and parents at Hillcrest

Cem., Stow, ME; m., 2 Nov. 1895, in Fryeburg, AMY ALICE CHANDLER (b. 27

Sept. 1873, probably in Chatham; d. 1 Dec. 1957), dau. of George & Alice

(Eastman) Chandler [See family of David H. Chandler]. Fred succeeded to

his father's farm at North Chatham. Five children, all born in Chatham,

as follows:

Calvin & Elizabeth (Charles) Heald of Fryeburg. Six children: (1)

(2.3.4) IDA ALICE CHARLES, dau. of Fred F. & Amy, b. 8 Dec. 1904; d. 9

March 1990, in Fryeburg, ME; m., 6 Oct. 1924, in Fryeburg, HAROLD R.

THURSTON (b. July 1898, in Fryeburg), son of William H. & Flora M.

(Kilgore) Thurston. They lived at North Fryeburg, where Ida served for

many years as Postmistress. Four children: (1) Harold R. Thurston, Jr.,

b. 31 July 1925; m. Clara Hill, dau. of Frank & Evelyn Smith Hill [See

family of Jonah Hill]; (2) William Frederick Thurston, m. Jeanine Doyon;

(3) Patricia Amy Thurston, b. 23 Dec. 1928, m. Russell Mollica; and (4)

Susan Jane Thurston, b. 2 Feb. 1940, m. ______ Gerry.

(2.3.5) ESTHER MAY CHARLES, dau. of Fred F. & Amy, b. 13 July 1910; m.,

23 May 1936, SHERMAN H. CHARLES (b. 4. January 1913, in Chatham), son of

Harry & Lois (Heald) Charles. Res. East Conway, NH; three children: (1)

Jean Ann Charles, m. Dale Hamilton; (2) Carol Marion Charles, b. 4 May

1938, m. Gerry Andrews; and (3) John Charles, m. Gloria McDonald.

(2.4) ALICE E. CHARLES, dau. of John F. & Elizabeth, b. 5 January 1880,

in Fryeburg, ME; d. 1976; buried with parents at Hillcrest Cem., Stow,

ME. Alice was a graduate of Radcliffe College and taught schools in

Bath, Lancaster, and Chatham, NH, and No. Fryeburg, and Stow, ME. She

also wrote poetry and published a book of her poems, "The Hills of Home,"

in 1974. Never married.

(3) ROSINA CHARLES, dau. of Bliss & Sarah, b. 15 Oct. 1841; d. 29 Oct.

1930, in Norway, ME; buried with husband at Hillcrest Cem., Stow, ME; m.

about Feb. 1863, ISAAC ABBOTT WALKER (b. 11 Nov. 1835, in Stow; d. 3 Feb.

1909, in Stow), son of William C. & Esther (Abbott) Walker. They lived

at Stow Corner, where Isaac was a farmer and served 42 years as Stow town

clerk He represented the area in the State Legislature in 1872-3, and

was Postmaster at Stow from 1862 to 1909. Seven children, all born in

Stow, as follows:

(3.1) SARAH C. WALKER, dau. of Isaac & Rosina (Charles) Walker, b. 8 May

1863; m., about 1886, ORRIN W. OSGOOD (b. 1860), son of James & Abigail

(Plummer) Osgood of Fryeburg, ME. They were living in Fryeburg in 1900

and 1910. Two children: (1) Carroll M. Osgood, b. 1889, m. Helen M.

Jellerson of Cornish, ME; and (2) Howard C. Osgood, b. 1899.

(3.2) WILLIAM H. WALKER, son of Isaac & Rosina (Charles) Walker, b. 15

April 1865; d. about 1954; buried with wife at Norway Pine Grove Cem.,

So. Paris, ME; m. 31 Oct. 1900, in Medford, MA, JOSEPHINE SIMMONS (b.

about 1877, in Somerville, MA; d. 18 June 1925), dau. of David B. & Eliza

(Newcomb) Simmons. They first lived on his father's farm at Stow, then

moved to Pike's Hill, Norway, in 1918. Four children, born in Stow: (1)

Stanley S. Walker, b. 24 May 1904; (2) William Cecil Walker, b. 13 March

1907, d. 1 Aug. 1958, m. Marion E. Wheeler; (3) Harry C. Walker, b. 23

Oct. 1908, d. 21 May 1995, unmarried; and (4) Edith Rosina Walker, b. 4

March 1918, d. 26 March 1944.

(3.3) CHARLES B. WALKER, son of Isaac & Rosina (Charles) Walker, b. 16

Feb. 1868; m., 27 Nov. 1895, EMMA F. DREW of Jackson, NH. Charles was a

coachman residing in Jackson about 1907.

(3.4) AGNES E. WALKER, dau. of Isaac & Rosina (Charles) Walker, b. 8

Nov. 1869; d. 24 Aug. 1885; buried with parents at Hillcrest Cem., Stow,

ME.

(3.5) NELLIE B. WALKER, dau. of Isaac & Rosina (Charles) Walker, b. 22

Sept. 1872; d. 9 Oct. 1973, in Norway, ME; buried with parents at

Hillcrest Cem., Stow, ME. Nellie was an artist, employed for many years

at Thompson Art Studio in Portland, ME. She resided with her brother

William and his son, Harry, in Norway, but spent summers at the Isaac

Walker place at Stow Corner, where she painted many landscapes around the

area. Never married.

(3.6) EVA MAY WALKER, dau. of Isaac & Rosina (Charles) Walker, b. 16

June 1876; d. 27 Feb. 1881, in Stow, ME; buried with parents at Hillcrest

Cem., Stow.

(3.7) GEORGIA B. WALKER, dau. of Isaac & Rosina (Charles) Walker, b. 7

Feb. 1881; d. 1952; buried with husband and parents at Hillcrest Cem.,

Stow, ME; m., 30 Sept. 1908, WELLINGTON G. McALISTER of Kingfield, ME (b.

1887, in Waltham, MA; d. 1967). Three children: (1) Dorothy McAlister,

(4) NORMAN CHARLES, son of Bliss & Sarah, b. 20 Sept. 1844; d. Oct.

8 January 1871, in Bridgton, ME, ESTHER WALKER (b. 8 Aug. 1847; d. 1923),

dau. of Nathaniel & Olive A. (Charles) Walker of Fryeburg. Norman was an

undertaker in Fryeburg Village. Two children, as follows:

Feb. 1892, HERBERT HODSDON (1873-1937) of Ossipee, NH. They were

residing in Fryeburg about 1907, where he was an undertaker. Four

children: (1) Helen C. Hodsdon, b. 1893, m. Edwin Stetson; (2) Charlotte

W. Hodsdon, b. 1898, m. Virgil Johnson; (3) Arthur N. Hodsdon, 1901-1967,

m. Eleanor Kerr; and (4) Grant W. Hodsdon, b about 1902, m. Florence

Turner.

(5) GEORGE A. CHARLES, son of Bliss & Sarah, b. 1 Aug. 1846; d. 10 Oct.

30 Nov. 1873, BESSIE P. WALKER (b. 21 July 1851; d. 6 Dec. 1894), dau. of

Palmer & Lydia (Webb) Walker of Lovell, ME. He was a farmer at Fryeburg

Center. One child: Infant son, b. 27 Aug. 1879; d. 4 Sept. 1879.

(6) DEXTER CHARLES, son of Bliss & Sarah, b. 21 Aug. 1848; d. 15 March

1934, in No. Chatham; buried with first wife at Eastman/Charles Cem., No.

Chatham; m. (1st), 23 April 1871, NANCY GREELY WYMAN (b. 5 June 1852, in

Chatham; d. 24 July 1891), dau. of Seth & Susan (Chandler) Wyman [See

family of Jonas Wyman]. Dexter m. (2nd), 22 or 29 April 1896, Mrs.

Lucinda M. (Gordon) Blake (b. 20 March 1856, in Chatham; d. 28 Nov.

1939), dau. of John H. & Mary (Webb) Gordon of So. Chatham, and widow of

Dana Blake. Dexter settled on the next farm north of his father, which

had originally belonged to his uncle, Isaac Charles. Three children, all

born in Chatham, as follows:

Emerson. They first lived with his father at North Chatham, and about

1907 were in Stow, where Mark was a farmer. Three children: (1)

(2) Dana Emerson Charles, b. 13 June 1901, in Chatham; m. Frances E.

from 1869 until 1878, and in Biddeford, ME, from 1878 until 1883. One
