died 8 Oct. 1865; buried with his three wives at Eastman/Charles

Cemetery, No. Chatham;

married (1st), probably about 1810:

SARAH RICHARDSON;

daughter of Rev. Zebediah and Rebecca (Snow) Richardson of Fryeburg,

ME;

born about 1780;

died 30 December 1817; and Henry married (2nd), 20 April 1820:

SUSAN JENKINS of Chatham;

born about 1791;

died 20 March 1836; and Henry married (3rd), between 1836 and 1850:

MARY __________; a widow;

born about 1803, in Hollis, ME;

died 11 or 15 October 1858.

 

Henry Camel McKeen settled in North Chatham, NH, sometime between

1810 and 1820, and lived there the remainder of his life. Based on

censuses and the 1860 map of Chatham, it appears that he lived on the

west side of the road through North Chatham, near Mill Brook. Henry had

two children by his first marriage, three children by his second

marriage, and none by his third marriage.

(1) HENRY CAMEL McKEEN, Jr., son of Henry & Sarah, b. 6 December 1813,

probably in Chatham; d. March 1871, probably in Stow, ME; burial place

not known; m., probably about 1835, ELIZA ADAMS (born 7 July 1812).

Henry Jr. was living in Stow, ME, in the censuses of 1840-1870, listed as

a farmer. Eight children, as follows (for further data see

www.oocities.org/Heartland/Grove/9111/): Seth McKeen (b. 9 April 1836;

moved to Iowa); Benjamin McKeen (b. 19 Nov. 1837); Osborn McKeen (b. 14

Nov. 1839); Albert McKeen (b. 9 June 1841; d. 14 July 1843); Sarah McKeen

(b. 1 June 1843; m. George W. Howard); Mary F. McKeen (b. 25 Oct. 1845;

m. Walter Pillsbury); Nancy McKeen (b. 9 Oct. 1846; m. Joseph C. Howard);

and Henry McKeen, 3rd. (b. 3 Sept. 1853; m. Rose Johnson).

(2) BENJAMIN WALKER McKEEN, son of Henry & Sarah, b. 25 Dec. 1817,

probably in Chatham; d. 5 Jan. 1894, in Fryeburg, ME; buried with wife at

North Fryeburg Cem.; m. about 1848, NANCY WYMAN (b. 9 June 1827; d. 8

March 1907), dau. of Reuben & Sarah (Walker) Wyman of Chatham. Benjamin,

a farmer, first lived at North Fryeburg, and moved to West Fryeburg in

the 1860's to a farm which was later taken over by his son. One child,

as follows:

(2.1) BENJAMIN WALKER McKEEN (known as B. Walker McKeen), son of

Benjamin & Nancy, b. 9 Nov. 1849, in North Fryeburg, ME; d. 22 May 1922,

in West Fryeburg, ME; buried with wife at North Fryeburg Cem.; m., about

1883, JENNIE H. LOVEJOY (b. Aug. 1861, in Concord, NH; d. 16 April 1941,

in Conway, NH), dau. of Will & Mary J. (Hutchinson) Lovejoy). B. Walker

McKeen lived on his father's farm, "The Pines," at West Fryeburg, where

he was a prominent farmer and active in community affairs. He served on

the Maine Board of Agriculture from 1887 until 1902, acting as its vice

president in 1890, its president in 1891, and as its secretary in 1887,

1888, and 1892-1902. He was supervisor of schools in Fryeburg for

several years and was secretary of the West Oxford Agricultural Society

(Fryeburg Fair) for many years. Four children, as follows:

(2.1.1) HAROLD W. McKEEN, son of B. Walker McKeen, b. 1 May 1884; d. 25

Aug. 1959; buried with wife at North Fryeburg Cem.; m., 21 March 1904,

EDITH LANG (b. 24 Aug. 1881; d. 28 May 1943), dau. of Edwin S. & Ella F.

(Owen) Lang of So. Chatham. They resided in Fryeburg and had four

children: Charles H. McKeen (1904-1978; m. Beatrice Thompson); Harry B.

McKeen (1905-1960; m. Esther Atkins); Donald W. McKeen (1908-1954; m.

Nellie H. Littlefield); and Ralph Edwin McKeen (1915-1980).

(2.1.2) ETHEL McKEEN, dau. of B. Walker McKeen, b. 30 May 1886; d. 14

Oct. 1891; buried with parents at North Fryeburg Cem.

(2.1.3) ELLIS WYMAN McKEEN, son of B. Walker McKeen, b. 15 June 1889, in

Fryeburg, ME; d. 17 January 1955, in Conway, NH; buried with wife at Pine

Grove Cem., Fryeburg, ME; m., 15 June 1925, MARY E. HASTINGS (1891-1972),

dau. of Edward E. & Jennie (Warren) Hastings of Fryeburg. Ellis received

a B.S. degree from the University of Maine in 1912, and an M.S. degree

from Bates College (Lewiston, ME) in 1932. He first taught school at

Leavitt Institute in Turner, ME, then at the high school in Washburn, ME.

He enlisted in the U. S. Army during World War I, served until the end

of the war, then returned to Leavitt Institute. He went to Kennett High

School in Conway, NH, when that school first opened in 1923, and served

there first as sub-master for a few months. He took over as headmaster

at Kennett in November of 1923, and served in that position until his

retirement in 1947. He then went to the high school in Bartlett, NH,

where he was principal for two years. Ellis was a member of the Conway

school board at the time of his death. No children.

(2.1.4) RALPH L. McKEEN, son of B. Walker McKeen, b. Feb. 1900; d. 1901;

buried with parents at North Fryeburg Cem.

before 1830.

(4) WILLIAM McKEEN, son of Henry & Susan, b. 11 April 1823, probably in

Chatham; d. 15 Feb. 1900, in Chatham; buried with wife at Chatham Center

Cem.; m., about 1850, HARRIET WALKER (b. 7 Sept. 1825, in West Stoneham,

ME; d. 27 Nov. 1890, in Chatham), dau. of Benjamin & Jane (McKeen)

Walker. William, a farmer, lived in Lovell, ME; Stow, ME; and finally in

Chatham. Five children, as follows:

(4.1) MEHITABLE McKEEN, dau. of William & Harriet, b. April 1852,

probably in Lovell, ME; d. 1904; buried with parents at Chatham Ctr.

Cem.; m. (1st), intentions in Chatham, 8 March 1871, as his second wife,

ORESTES BROWN SANBORN (b. 2 May 1845, in Baldwin, ME; d. after 1899).

Orestes was a shoemaker and a veteran of the Civil War; and he and

Mehitable lived in Chatham; and Stow, ME. Orestes m. (1st), Olive Jane

Guptill in 1867, and she died in 1870, with no children. He m. (2nd),

1871, Mehitable McKeen, and they divorced before 1878. Mehitable and

Orestes had two children: Winfield Scott Sanborn (1872-1945; m1, Susan

E. Blake; m2, Lydia Etta Johnson; m3, Winnie F. Eldridge); and William

McKeen Sanborn (1874-1959; m. Etta Mae Wiggin). Orestes Sanborn m.

(3rd), Mary Jane Whitaker of Conway, NH; and they had one child, Frank

Sanborn, b. about 1886. Mehitable (McKeen) Sanborn m. (2nd), about 1878,

as his third wife, ABRAM W. ANDERSON (b. 9 June 1831; d. 10 July 1918;

buried with first wife at Chatham Ctr. Cem). Abram m. (1st), Lois B.

Meserve, who died in 1872; and m. (2nd), Mary (Farrington) Wiley, who

died in 1877. Mehitable and Abram had no children.

(4.2) WARREN D. McKEEN, son of William & Harriet, b. Dec. 1853, probably

in Lovell, ME; d. 2 August 1920; place of burial unknown; m. (1st), 26

Aug. 1877, in Chatham, MATTIE J. JENKINS (b. 3 May 1853, probably in

Chatham; d. 4 Aug. 1887; Chatham Ctr. Cem.), dau. of Thomas R. & Nancy

(Smith) Jenkins. Warren and Mattie had two children: Nettie M. McKeen

(b. 20 Oct 1881; d. 19 May 1942; m. Ralph A. Wentworth of East Conway,

NH); and Waldo C. McKeen (b. 13 July 1887; probably settled in Portland,

ME). Warren m. (2nd), 12 Nov. 1889, JULIA ANNETTE THOMAS (b. Oct. 1872),

dau. of Milburn & Ann A. (Eaton) Thomas of Chatham (See Eaton family data

elsewhere on this site); no children. Warren was a farmer residing in

Chatham in the censuses of 1880-1910.

(4.3) WALTER PILLSBURY McKEEN, son of William & Harriet, b. 1857, in

Stow, ME; d. 11 June 1935, in Stow; buried with wife at Chatham Center

Cem.; m., 7 Dec. 1879, in Chatham, SARAH J. EASTMAN (b. May 1853, in

Bartlett, NH; d. 3 Nov. 1925, in Stow, ME), dau. of Lorenzo & Mary

(Harriman) Eastman. Sarah m. (1st), 27 Jan. 1871, Oliver Dana Jewett

(1843-1878); and had four children: Abbie S. Jewett (1872-1936; m. Frank

Bickford; res. Stow, ME); Ernest O. Jewett (1874-1940; m. Flora Hammond;

res. Fryeburg, ME); William H. Jewett, adopted by Otis Farrington and

name changed to William H. Farrington (b. 1875; m. Myrtle Dawson; res.

Stow and Fryeburg, ME, and Chatham and Conway, NH); and Marion A. Jewett

(b. 1877; m. George Bickford). Walter McKeen was a farmer and served as

selectman at Chatham and Stow. Walter and Sarah resided at Chatham and

Stow, and had five children, as follows:

in Chatham; d. 1937; buried with wife at Chatham Ctr. Cem.; m., 1 Oct.

1918, in Stow, ME, REBEKAH E. CHARLES (b. 17 April 1898, in Chatham; d.

1965), dau. of Madison Omer & Lillian (Charles) Charles. Rebekah m.

(2nd), 15 Nov. 1940, Charles Clyde Whitehouse (1900-1975) of Bridgton,

ME. No children by either marriage. Edwin was a farmer and lived with

his parents. He served as Stow road commissioner for ten or more years;

and Rebekah served as Stow town treasurer and as a member of the Stow

school board for several years.

(4.3.2) MATTIE J. McKEEN, dau. of Walter & Sarah, b. 16 Sept. 1887, in

Chatham; d. 28 Oct. 1963; buried with husband at Chatham Ctr. Cem; m., 28

Oct. 1905, in Fryeburg, ME, GUY M. CROUSE (b. 29 July 1882, in

Friendship, ME; d. 21 April 1961), son of Mark & Eldora (Marshall)

Crouse. Guy was a farmer and he and Mattie resided at several places in

Stow, ME, then moved to Chatham in 1921, where they lived the remainder

of their lives. Two children: Rodney Marshall Crouse (1908-1993; m.

Alice E. Curtis; res. Stow); and Harry Guy Crouse (b. 1923; m. Gloria C.

J. Wiggin; res. Chatham).

(4.3.3) GLENORA McKEEN, dau. of Walter & Sarah, b. 6 Nov. 1889, in

Chatham; d. 24 Dec. 1979; buried with husband at Chatham Ctr. Cem.; m.,

30 Sept. 1914, in Fryeburg, ME, OLIN R. HANSCOM (b. 7 April 1891, in

Chatham; d. 23 Aug. 1963), son of Seth & Estella (Cobb) Hanscom (See

Hanscom and Cobb family data elsewhere on this site). Glenora was a

graduate of Bridgton (ME) Academy, attended Gorham (ME) Normal School,

and for several years taught in the schools of Stow, ME, and Chatham.

Olin Hanscom attended Shaw's Business College in Portland, ME, and taught

school in Stow for a short time. He was a farmer and served many years

as Chatham town clerk and treasurer. Glenora and Olin lived on the

homestead farm of his parents in Chatham, and had three children: Hilda

Estella Hanscom (b. 1915; m. Frederic Lusky; res. Chatham); Ruth Sarah

Hanscom (1917-1973; m. G. Gordon Gilman; res. Stow, ME); and Edna Evelyn

Hanscom (b. 1924; m. J. Holman Pray; res. Fryeburg, ME).

(4.3.4) EDNA MAY McKEEN, dau. of Walter & Sarah, b. 14 April 1892, in

Chatham; d. 21 Oct. 1918, in Stow, ME; buried with parents at Chatham

Ctr. Cem; never married.

(4.3.5) SADIE EVELYN McKEEN, dau. of Walter & Sarah, b. 2 Dec. 1893, in

(5) LYDIA B. McKEEN, dau. of Henry & Susan, b. 2 June 1829, in Chatham;

d. 2 Feb. 1912, in Stow, ME; buried with husband at Hillcrest Cem., Stow;

m., 14 Oct. 1851, SOLOMON JOHNSON (b. March 1828; d. 7 April 1920),

probably son of Leighton & Sarah (Gray) Johnson of Stow. Solomon was a

farmer and they lived in Stow; seven children: Susan J. Johnson

(1855-1950; m. Albert Frank Eastman; res. Conway, NH, and So. Chatham);

Charles Freemont Johnson (1856-1922; apparently unmarried; res. Stow);

Rose Ella Johnson (1858-1915; m. her first cousin, Henry McKeen, 3rd; see

under #1, above); Cassie Johnson (1861-1893; m. Joseph Wiley; res. Stow);

Flora E. Johnson (1864-1895; m. John F. McKeen); and Henry M. Johnson

(1866-1933; m. Minnie B. Webber; res. Stow).
