Jonah and Sally settled in South Chatham soon after
their marriage
and lived there the remainder of their lives. Jonah served in the New
Hampshire Militia as a Captain. In 1810 he built a carding mill on the
mill brook where it flows into Lower Kimball Pond in South Chatham.
This
mill was in operation until 1910, when it was closed by his grandson,
Dana Hill.

(1) JONAH HILL, JR., son of Jonah & Sally, b. 28 March 1810, in Chatham;

Cem.; m. (1st), 20 Dec. 1837, in Fryeburg, ME, PERSIS BALLARD (b. 18
Nov.
1811; d. 3 April 1867), dau. of Uriah & Hannah (Frye) Ballard of
Fryeburg. Jonah m. (2nd), 4 Oct. 1873, Mrs. ABIGAIL J. (EASTMAN) LANG
(b. 19 Feb. 1815, in Conway, NH; d. 12 Feb. 1882, in Chatham), dau. of
Jonathan & Phebe (Lovejoy) Eastman of No. Conway, NH., and widow of
Joseph Lang (1807-1866) of Conway. Jonah, Jr. attended Fryeburg
Academy,
read law with Judge Langdon, taught school in Chatham for many years,
and
was Postmaster for several years. In 1831 he built a house (still
standing) on the hill near his father's mill. He served as a selectman
of
Chatham and a representative in the New Hampshire Legislature. He was a
member of, and helped build, the Congregational Church at Chatham
Center.
Jonah, Jr. succeeded to his father's mill and operated it until about
1897. Jonah, Jr. and Persis had three children, as follows:
(1.1) DANA HILL, son of Jonah, Jr. & Persis, b. 31 Aug. 1839; d. 1923;
buried with wife at So. Chatham Cem.; m., 4 July 1861, EMILY M. LANG (b.
8 Jan. 1843, in Conway, NH; d. 1918), dau. of Joseph & Abigail J.
(Eastman) Lang. Dana was a farmer and operated the mill of his
grandfather and father until 1910 when he closed it. He taught school
at
Chatham Center, was a representative to the state legislature, and was
chairman of the Chatham Board of Selectmen for seven years. Emily was
Postmistress at South Chatham for several years. They had five
children,

Chatham; d. 1961; buried with husband at Pine Grove Cem., Fryeburg, ME;
m., 8 Aug. 1897, in Lovell, ME, FRANK RANFORD LOCKE (b. 1875, in
Fryeburg, ME; d. 1960), son of Frank & Lydia (Hall) Locke. They had at
least one child: Margery Locke (b. 13 March 1898; d. 10 Oct. 1993; m.
Leon Shirley).

Chatham; d. 1948; buried with wife Inez at So. Chatham Cem.; m. (1st)
GRACE DAVIDSON GIBB (b. 1881, in Scotland; known in this country by her
step father's name, Ogilvie); m. (2nd), 29 Oct. 1927, in Lincoln, ME,
Mrs. Inez I. (Bishop) Sullivan (b. 1881, in Springfield, ME; d. 1979),
dau. of Charles E. & Roxy (Worcester) Bishop. Children: Fred D.
Hill
(1900-1990; m. Ruth Hamilton); Frank Leslie Hill (b. 1904, in Medfield,
MA; d. 1983; m. Evelyn L. Smith); Mildred J. Hill (m1, Wallace Francis;
m2, Clayton Heath); and Arthur A. Hill (m1, Helen Ward Andrews; m2,
Elizabeth Leighton Smith).

(2) JOSEPH STIMSON HILL, son of Jonah & Sally, b. 13 July 1811, in
Chatham; d. 8 Sept. 1847, in Biddeford, ME; m., 17 Dec. 1840, NANCY H.
HILL, dau. of Jonathan & Mary (Hodgdon) Hill of Limerick, ME. Before
marriage both Joseph and Nancy were teachers. They settled in
Biddeford,
ME, where Joseph and his brother, Moses Bradbury Hill, manufactured
woolen goods. Three children, as follows:
(2.1) FRANK ALPINE HILL, son of Joseph & Nancy; b. 12 Oct. 1841, in
Biddeford, ME; m., 1866, MARGARETTA S. BRACKETT of Biddeford. Frank was
a graduate of Bowdoin College and studied law in the office of John
Goodwin in Biddeford. In 1865 he began a long and distinguished career
in the field of education throughout New England and also served several
years as Secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education. Three
children: Myron Francis Hill, Lewis Dana Hill, and Frederick Brackett
Hill, all of whom were Harvard graduates.
(2.2) MELVIN JOSEPH HILL, son of Joseph & Nancy, b. 7 July 1843, in
Biddeford, ME; m., 6 July 1868, LOUISE ELIZABETH MOWRY (b. Woonsocket,
RI). Melvin was a graduate of Bowdoin College. Like his brother,
Frank,
he also had a long and distinguished career in the field of education in
New England. He was a long-time resident of Wakefield, MA. Two
children: Ernest F. Hill (b. about 1871; d. as a student at Harvard
about 1892), and another child who died in infancy.
(2.3) HARRIET JANE HILL, dau. of Joseph & Nancy, d. at age 25,
"...a
young woman of rare beauty of mind and brillancy of promise."
(3) MOSES BRADBURY HILL, son of Jonah & Sally, b. 29 April 1813, in
Chatham; d. 22 March 1851; m., 22 January 1845, LIVONIA HAMILTON
(1821-1851), dau. of John Hamilton. In 1839, Moses and his brother,
Joseph, bought a one-half interest in a clothing and carding mill from
Samuel Merrill on Spring's Island in Biddeford, ME. One child:

(4) SAMUEL MERRILL HILL, son of Jonah & Sally, b. 10 Aug. 1814, in
Chatham; died 26 Nov. 1861, in Fryeburg, ME; buried in his father's lot
at So. Chatham Cem.; m., 10 January 1853, ELIZA CLARK, who after
Samuel's
death m. William Phipps and moved to Minnesota. Samuel was a sailor.
In 1850 he was a "clothier," living with his father. In 1860 he
was a
farmer residing in Fryeburg, ME. One child: Martha E. Hill (b. about
1855; m. Decatur Roberts).
(5) SALLY W. HILL, dau. of Jonah & Sally, b. 21 Dec. 1815, in Chatham;
d. 8 May 1903, in So. Chatham; buried with husband at So. Chatham Cem.;
m., 1835, CHARLES WALKER (b. 1815; d. 10 Feb. 1884), probably son of
William Walker. They resided at South Chatham. Children:

(b. 23 Feb. 1839; d. 21 Nov. 1877); and Sarah Walker (1842-1923; m., 6
June 1867, Josiah Wood Walker).
(6) POLLY STIMSON HILL, dau. of Jonah & Sally, b. 16 May 1818, in
Chatham; d. 17 April 1846, in LaGrange, ME; m., 20 Dec. 1841, JOHN R.
AVERILL. Children: (1) Johan H. Averill, d. 13 May 1846, age 1 year;
and (2) Lucien H. Averill, d. 3 June 1851, age 8 years.
(7) GEORGE AUGUSTUS HILL, son of Jonah & Sally, b. 27 Oct. 1819, in
Chatham; d. 28 April 1865, in Bridgton, ME. He may have had two
children: Phronie Hill and Annie Hill.
(8) FRANCIS EASTMAN HILL, son of Jonah & Sally, b. 28 July 1822; d.
Oct.
1858; buried with wife at Laurel Hill Cem., Saco, ME; m., 1 January
1851,

1815/6; d. 15 Feb. 1885), son of Jonathan & Mary (Hodgdon) Hill of
Limerick, ME. Children: (1) Erastus G. Hill, a realtor in Florida;
and
(2) Charles D. Hill, b. 19 March 1855, a physician in Bethel, ME.
(10) CHARLES EDWIN HILL, son of Jonah & Sally, b. 26 April 1825, in
Chatham; d. 16 April 1884, in Fryeburg, ME; buried with second wife at
Pine Grove Cem., Fryeburg; m. (1st), MARINDA P. WIGGIN (d. May 1863);
one
child. Charles m. (2nd), SUSAN OSGOOD (1838-1886), dau. of Caleb &
Dolly
(Wiley) Osgood of Fryeburg; two children. Charles graduated from
Bowdoin
College in Brunswick, ME. He was a physician, living unmarried with his
father in Chatham in 1850. He settled in North Fryeburg and soon
thereafter moved to Bridgton, ME, where he remained until 1879. He then
moved to Fryeburg, where he resided until his death. Biographical
Review
of Franklin & Oxford Counties, Maine; 1897: "...An able physician, he
enjoyed a large practice in this vicinity; and he occupied a prominent
position in the community."
(10.1) CHARLES E. HILL (name changed to CHARLES E. FESSENDEN), son of
Charles & Marinda, b. probably about 1863. After the death of his
mother
he was adopted by his aunt and later became a physician, practicing in
Newton Center, MA, about 1897.
(10.2) FRANK A. HILL, son of Charles & Susan, b. 14 Aug. 1866, in
Fryeburg, ME; d. 1946; buried with wife at Pine Grove Cem., Fryeburg;
m.,
20 April 1892, DORA A. BRICKETT (b. 1 May 1874, in Stow, ME; d. 1948),
dau. of Gardner & Angeline (Emery) Brickett. REsided in Fryeburg

was an undertaker and resided in Fryeburg Village.
(10.3) EDWIN RAY HILL, son of Charles & Susan, b. 1876; d. 1952;
buried
with wife at Pine Grove Cem., Fryeburg, ME; m. MAUD ESTHER WHITNEY
(1873-1942). He was engaged in the meat and fish business in Fryeburg
Village about 1897.
(11) NANCY HILL, dau. of Jonah & Sally, b. 3 January 1827, in Chatham;
d. 2 July 1827; buried at So. Chatham Cem.
(12) MARTHA ELIZABETH HILL, dau. of Jonah & Sally, b. 18 May 1828, in
Chatham; d. 29 Feb. 1852; buried at So. Chatham Cem.; residing,
unmarried, with her father in Chatham in 1850.
