Russell and Melinda first settled in Fryeburg, then moved to Chatham
in the 1820's. Russell took over his father's homestead at North
Chatham.
Twelve children of Russell & Melinda (Ames) Charles, as follows:
(1) PETER CHARLES, son of Russell & Melinda, b. 5 Feb. 1819, in
Fryeburg, ME; d. 25 Nov. 1898; buried with wife at Chandler Cem., No. Chatham; m., 6 April 1855,
SARAH CHANDLER
(b. 1 May 1836 or 1837, in Chatham; d. 25 Aug. 1901, in Conway, NH), dau.
of Daniel & Jane (Walker) Chandler. (See family of Paul Chandler). Peter was a farmer and
they settled east of the Cold River in Stow, ME, about one and one-half miles southeast of the
Charles homestead at North Chatham. Nine children, as follows:
(1.1) CELISSA (or Celissia or Celicia) C. CHARLES, dau. of Peter &
Sarah, b. 5 Feb. 1856 (from Chandler Genealogy) or 15 Feb. 1857 (from gravestone in Stow, ME)
or 11 Feb. 1857 (from gravestone in No. Chatham); d. 21 or 24 Oct. 1863; probably buried
first at a family site near the Peter Charles homestead in Stow, ME, then later moved to
parents' lot at Chandler Cem., No. Chatham.
(1.2) LUCINDA FLINT CHARLES, dau. of Peter & Sarah, b. 9 or 19 Feb.
1859; d. 1 May 1862; probably buried first at a family site near the Peter Charles
homestead in Stow, ME, then later moved to parents' lot at Chandler Cem., No. Chatham.
(1.3) FRANK LESLIE CHARLES, son of Peter & Sarah, b. 17 March 1861; a
farm laborer, living with his parents in Stow, ME, in 1880. No further information.
(1.4) DAVID PERRY CHARLES, son of Peter & Sarah, b. 26 Dec. 1864 or
1865, in Stow, ME; d. 1936; buried with his parents, his wife, and his wife's parents at
Chandler Cem., No. Chatham; m., 26 January 1895, his first and second cousin, VILETTIE CHARLES (b. 4
May 1863, in Chatham; d. 1 July 1937), dau. of Benjamin & Lydia (Charles) Charles.
David was a farmer, residing on his father's homestead at Stow in 1900. At least one child:

Stow, ME; d. Nov. 1931; m. JAMES WALLACE of California. Mabel was residing, unmarried, in
Stow, with her brother, David Charles, in 1900. No further information.
(1.6) LOTTIE GORDON CHARLES, dau. of Peter & Sarah, b. 4 Aug. 1870, in
Stow, ME; d. 11 May 1955; m., 1 January 1894, GEORGE HENRY HEATH (b. 9 Nov. 1860, in
Conway, NH; d. 13 April 1944), son of George A. & Elizabeth (Harriman) Heath. They
resided in Conway Village; one child: Ray A. Heath, who d. 1943.
(1.7) SUSAN N. CHARLES (or NETTIE S. CHARLES), dau. of Peter & Sarah, b.
23 May 1873; d. 9 Oct. 1888; buried with parents at Chandler Cem., No. Chatham.
(1.8) RODNEY PETER CHARLES, son of Peter & Sarah, b. 27 or 29 Feb. 1876;
d. January 1946. Residing, unmarried, in Stow, ME, with brother, David Charles in
1900. No further information.
(1.9) EFFIE ELLA CHARLES, dau. of Peter & Sarah, b. 18 Feb. 1879, in
Stow, ME; d. March 1947; m. BENJAMIN JENKINS of California. Effie was residing, unmarried,
in Stow, with her
brother, David Charles, in 1900. No further information.
(2) DEAN CHARLES, son of Russell & Melinda, b. 20 Aug. 1820, in
Fryeburg, ME; d. 17 Feb. 1881, in Chatham; buried with wife at Chandler Cem., No. Chatham; m.,
about 1850, ESTHER C. EASTMAN (b. 18 Nov. 1823, in Stow, ME; d. 30 Nov. 1921, in Chatham),
dau. of Jeremy Jr. & Cynthia (Abbott) Eastman. (See Eastman data at

Dean was a farmer, and they lived in Stow until the 1870's, when they
moved to the Solomon Charles homestead at North Chatham. Five children (1900 census indicates
they had six children, three living in 1900), as follows:

in Stow, ME; residing in Rochester, NH, about 1907. No further information.
(2.2) SUMNER F. CHARLES, son of Dean & Esther, b. about 1854, probably
in Stow, ME; probably died before 1870. No further information.
(2.3) MADISON OMER CHARLES (known as Omer), son of Dean & Esther, b.
January 1859, in Stow, ME; d. 1939; buried with wife at Chandler Cem., No. Chatham; m.,
11 Nov. 1893, in Fryeburg, ME, LILLIAN B. CHARLES (b. 13 August 1874, in Fryeburg; d.
1967), dau. of Simeon & Rebecca (Woodman) Charles of Fryeburg. Omer was a farmer who succeeded
to his father's farm at North Chatham. Lillian served as Postmistress at North Chatham
for many years and was succeeded by her son Walton's wife, Mary Ellen (Webster) Charles.
Nine children, as follows: (2.3.1) MERTON A. CHARLES, son of M. Omer & Lillian, b. 28 January 1895,
in Chatham; d. 31 July 1960; buried with wife at Pine Grove Cem, Fryeburg, ME; m., 11
January 1920, in No.
Conway, NH, MABEL ROGERS (1898-1974) of Barre, VT. Merton was a veteran
of the First World War. They resided in Fryeburg Ctr., where he was town road
commissioner for many years. No children.
(2.3.2) GLADYS V. CHARLES, dau. M. Omer & Lillian, b. 14 March 1896, in
Chatham; m., 16 May 1916, in Fryeburg, ME, EARL C. BELL (1891-1973; buried at Pine Grove
Cem., Fryeburg), son of David & Rosabel (Kennison) Bell of Fryeburg. Two children: David
Bell (m. Dorothy
Harring); and Lillian Bell (c.1921-1995; m1, Lawrence Eastman; m2, Aubrey G. Edgecomb).

Chatham; d. 1965; buried with both her husbands at Chatham Ctr. Cem.; m. (1st), 1
Oct. 1818, in Stow, ME, EDWIN L. McKEEN (1884-1937), son of Walter & Sarah (Eastman) McKeen;
resided in Stow, where Rebekah served as town treasurer and member of the town school

Chatham; d. 1939; buried with husband at Chatham Ctr. Cem.; m., 10 May
1920, in Rochester, NH, EVERETT EASTMAN (b. 1 Dec. 1890, in Chatham; d.
1970), son of Loren & Eliza (Rollins) Eastman. Resided at Chatham

(2.3.6) SIMEON HENRY CHARLES, son of M. Omer Lillian, b. 10 Sept. 1905,
in Chatham; d. 6 Dec. 1986; buried with wife at Hillcrest Cem., Stow, ME;
m., 6 July 1933, in East Providence, RI, LOUISE M. CORRIVEAU (b. 12 Aug.
1904, in Fall River, MA; d. 10 Nov. 1974), dau. of Fred & Amanda (Lahey)
Corriveau. Louise m. (1st), a Bedard and had three children: Armand
Bedard (res. Rhode Island); Adrian "Sis" Bedard (m1, Charles Hile; m2,
William Robbins); and Doris Bedard (m. George Braga; res. Florida).
Simeon lived at several places in Stow, and he ran a store at Stow Corner
from the 1950's until it burned in 1977. Another store was built in 1977
on the same site by his step-daughter, Adrian, who later sold to Alfred
Wright of Chatham. Louise was Postmistress at Stow for several years
until the Post Office closed in 1959. Simeon and Louise had no children.
(2.3.7) ALBERT CLINTON CHARLES, son of M. Omer & Lillian, b. 14 June
1907, in Chatham; d. 1992; buried with wife at Chandler Cem., No.
Chatham; m., 5 Feb. 1936, MARION EVELYN HEAD (b. 8 April 1913, in So.
Chatham; d. 23 Aug. 1997), dau. of Perley & Amy (Hill) Head. They
resided at the Charles homestead in North Chatham, then later moved to
Fryeburg, ME. Two children: (1) REBECCA JANE CHARLES (m1, Gordon Hill;
m2, _________ Dewitt); and NANCY CHARLES (m. Bruce Layne).
(2.3.8) LILLIAN ANNA CHARLES (known as Anna), dau. of M. Omer & Lillian,
b. 8 Feb. 1909, in Chatham; now residing with her children in Lovell, ME
and Ashland, NH; m., 19 Nov. 1931, in Lovell, MILLARD H. CHANDLER (b. 22
Dec. 1905, in Chatham; d. 5 Sept. 1987; buried at Chandler Cem., No.
Chatham), son of John & Henrietta (Brickett) Chandler. Two children.

(2.3.9) EVERETT WALTON CHARLES (known as Walton), son of M. Omer &
Lillian, b. 20 June 1914, in Chatham; resides on the Charles homestead at
North Chatham; m. MARY ELLEN WEBSTER, dau. of Richard & Fannie (Ballard)
Webster of East Conway, NH. Mary Ellen succeeded her mother-in-law,
Lillian, as Postmistress at North Chatham and served in that position
until the Post Office closed in 1958. Four children: (1) THAYER
CHARLES, m. George Colbath; (2) RICHARD OMER CHARLES; (3) RUSSELL
D. CHARLES; and (4) KIMBERLY A. CHARLES.
(2.4) WILLIE CLINTON CHARLES, son of Dean & Esther, b. 26 April 1863, in
Stow, ME; d. 18 January 1934, in No. Chatham; buried at Chandler Cem.,
No. Chatham; m., 8 June 1907, in Bartlett, NH, Mrs. MINNIE F.
(GILPATRICK) DROWN (b. about 1879, in Hiram, ME), dau. of Oris & Emily J.
(Sawyer) Gilpatrick. Minnie had at least one child, Alice May Drown, by
her first marriage. No further information.
(2.5) MELINDA CYNTHIA CHARLES (known as Lynn), dau. of Dean & Esther, b.
14 May 1867, probably in Stow, ME; d. 6 April 1887; buried at North
Fryeburg, ME, Cem.; m., 16 Sept. 1884, in Chatham, ELDEN DRESSER CHARLES
(b. 22 Nov. 1855), son of Oscar & Mattie F. (Emery) Charles of Stow. At
least two children: (1) Grover Clinton Charles (b. 13 Dec. 1884
[gravestone], or 16 Oct 1884 [VR Chatham]; d. 19 or 20 Apr. 1885; buried
with mother at No. Fryeburg Cem.); and (2) Arthur L. Charles (b. Apr.
1887; res. in family of Ezra Heald in Stow in 1900).
(3) SOLOMON CHARLES, son of Russell & Melinda, b. 31 Aug. 1822; m.
(1st), JULIANN (or JULIA) JACK (b. about 1828; d. shortly after 1850);
living in Stow, ME, in 1850; four children. Solomon moved to Cambria
County, Pennsylvania in the 1850's, where he was engaged in the shook
business. He m. (2nd), SARAH JAMES, and they had ten children. The
known children of Solomon Charles are as follows:

in Chatham.
(3.2) JASON CHARLES, son of Solomon & Juliann, b. about 1848, probably
in Stow, ME; living in the family of Jacob C. Eastman in Chatham in 1860,
and in the family of Philip Pitman in Chatham in 1870. No further
information.
(3.3) WARREN CHARLES, son of Solomon & Juliann, b. 1849, probably in
Stow, ME.
(3.4) JOHN WESLEY CHARLES, son of Solomon & Sarah, b. 16 March 1883, in
Chest Springs, Cambria County, PA; d. 25 Jan. 1962, in Punksutawney, PA;
m., 28 June 1903, MALINDA REBECCA MERCER; nine children, including
RICHARD KENNETH CHARLES, b. 1917.

Chatham. He is listed in the 1900 census as deaf and dumb.
(5) BENJAMIN E. CHARLES, son of Russell & Melinda, b. 22 Feb. 1827, in
Fryeburg, ME; d. 1895; buried with wife at Chandler Cem., No. Chatham;
m., 23 Sept. 1862, his first cousin, LYDIA A. CHARLES (b. 29 March 1837;
d. 25 Nov. 1873), dau. of Bliss & Sarah (Ames) Charles of No. Chatham.
In 1870 they were living with his father in North Chatham. At least five
children, as follows:

in May of 1850. Three children, as follows:

(7) HENRY CHARLES, son of Russell & Melinda, b. 10 Sept. 1831, in
Chatham; m. CYNTHIA __________ (b. about 1833 in ME). Henry served in
the Civil War (Co. E, 12th Maine Regiment; res. Lovell, ME), and was
living with his uncle, Samuel Charles, in Lovell, in 1860. No further
information.
(8) LAURA CHARLES, dau. of Russell & Melinda, b. 20 January 1834, in
Chatham; d. in Wisconsin; m., 9 January 1859, in Stow, ME, BENJAMIN W.
EASTMAN (b. 29 Aug. 1827, in Stow), son of Jeremy Jr. & Cynthia (Abbott)
Eastman. They were living in Stow in 1860, and probably moved to

Chatham; d. 18 March 1907; buried with husband at Hillcrest Cem., Stow,
ME; m., 25 Dec. 1864, as his second wife, MOSES KILGORE EASTMAN (b. 19
May 1815, in Lovell, Me; d. 19 April 1905), son of Jeremy & Betsy
(Kilgore) Eastman. They lived in the Union Hill section of Stow, and had
three children, as follows:
(10.1) MARIA C. E. EASTMAN, dau. of Moses & Hannah (Charles) Eastman, b.
9 Oct. 1872, in Stow, ME; d. __________; m. (1st) CALVIN HEALD (b. 1861,
in Lovell, ME), son of Calvin & Lydia (McDaniels) Heald. Maria had three
children born in Stow, as follows: (1) Louville Leonard Heald,
1891-1952, m. and divorced Sybil Sanborn, two children. (2) Lois Ivy
Heald, 1894-1975, m. Harry E. Charles, three children. (3) a daughter,
b. out of wedlock on 25 April 1901. Maria divorced Calvin Heald, and m.
(2nd), 24 Sept. 1911, in Chatham, GEORGE SHERMAN DREW (b. 3 Sept. 1870,
in Chatham; d. 15 Jan. 1912, in Chatham; buried with parents at Hillcrest
Cem., Stow), son of Frank & Abigail (McIntire) Drew.
(10.2) MILDRED W. EASTMAN, dau. of Moses & Hannah (Charles) Eastman, b.

(10.3) MAURICE M. EASTMAN, son of of Moses & Hannah (Charles) Eastman,
b. 20 July 1881, in Stow, ME; d. 28 October 1950, in Stow; buried with
wife at Hillcrest Cem., Stow; m., 18 Sept. 1904, BERTHA MAY CHARLES (b.
13 June 1877, in Stow; d. 17 Jan. 1963, in Fryeburg, ME), dau. of Olden
P. & Almira (Morrison) Charles. Resided in Stow; two children: (1)
Linwood C. Eastman, 1906-1919; and (2) Mildred M. Eastman, 1908-1911.
(11) RODNEY CHARLES, son of Russell & Melinda, b. 1 January 1842, in
Chatham; d. after 1892, probably in Pennsylvania; m., 1875, in Bloom
Township, Clearfield County, PA, SAMANTHA ANDERSON (d. 1892). Rodney
went to Cambria County, PA, in 1864, where he enlisted in the 209th
Pennsylvania Regiment and served until the end of the Civil War. He then
returned to Cambria County, where he was in the shook business until
1878. He then became a farmer in Bloom Township, where he served as town
treasurer and school director. Four children: (1) PERLEY CHARLES; (2)
HORACE CHARLES; (3) LAURA CHARLES; and (4) EDNA CHARLES.
(12) RUSSELL CHARLES, son of Russell & Melinda, b. 10 January 1848, in
Chatham; d. 7 March 1885, in Chatham; buried with wife at South Chatham
Cem.; m., 31 May 1874, IZA GORDON (b. 1844, in Chatham; d. 1896), dau. of
John H. & Mary D. (Webb) Gordon of So. Chatham. At least two children:
(1) RODNEY CHARLES, d. 5 Sept. 1871(?); age 5 weeks; buried with parents
at So. Chatham Cem.; and (2) DORA CHARLES, b. Jan. 1880.
