daughter of Samuel and Susanna (Abbott) Charles of Brimfield, MA,

and Fryeburg, ME;

born 6 April 1778, in Fryeburg, ME

died 25 August 1851, in Chatham.

Solomon and Susanna lived first in Fryeburg; then probably about

1815, they settled at North Chatham in what was then the Gilman Grant

(annexed to Chatham in 1817), where their great-great grandson, E. Walton

Charles now lives. Charles Brook, which runs through that property, was

named for this family. Solomon was a farmer, and in 1809, he signed the

petition for incorporation of the First Universalist Society in Fryeburg.

in Fryeburg, ME; d. 21 Sept. 1888, probably in Fryeburg; buried with

husband at Abbott Cem., Fryeburg Ctr.; m., 6 April 1817, ASA ABBOTT (b. 2

Nov. 1794, in Fryeburg; d. 23 Nov. 1869), son of Isaac, Jr. & Susanna

(Knight) Abbott of Fryeburg. Thirteen children, as follows:

(1.1) MEHITABLE ABBOTT, dau. of Asa & Hannah (Charles) Abbott, b. 3

Sept. 1817; m., 31 May 1841, MOSES LORD KNIGHT, JR. (b. 21 Apr. 1816, in

Alfred, ME), son of Moses L. & Susanna (Smith) Knight of Alfred and

Sweden, ME. Residing in Sweden in 1870; seven children.

(1.2) LUCY ABBOTT, dau. of Asa & Hannah (Charles) Abbott, b. 13 March

1819; m. STEPHEN DAY (b. about 1818). Residing in Fryeburg, ME in 1850,

with apparently one child.

(1.3) HANNAH ABBOTT, dau. of Asa & Hannah (Charles) Abbott, b. 9 January

1821; d. 18 Aug. 1919, in Chatham; buried with 2nd husband at Chatham

Ctr. Cem.; m. (1st) __________ DAY (probably died about 1850); no

children. In 1850 Hannah was living with her sister, Lucy (Abbott) Day

in Fryeburg. Hannah m. (2nd), 27 May 1851, as his 2nd wife, DANIEL

EMERSON, JR. (b. 18 Dec. 1890, in Lyman, NH; d. 4 Nov. 1858, in Chatham),

son of Daniel & Lydia (Whitford) Emerson; resided in Chatham; two

children. Hannah m. (3rd), 13 Sept. 1890, as his 2nd wife, WILLIAM D.

EMERSON (1819-1894), of Stow, ME, brother to Daniel Emerson, Jr.; no

(1.4) DEAN ABBOTT, son of Asa & Hannah (Charles) Abbott, b. 22 or 23

Nov. 1822; d. 29 Nov. 1910, in Fryeburg, ME; buried with wives at Mt.

Pleasant Cem., Denmark, ME; m. (1st), 17 Sept. 1846, APPHIA FRYE (b. 5

Oct. 1821, in Fryeburg; d. 18 May 1898), dau. of Joseph & Eunice (Knight)

Frye; ten children. Dean m. (2nd), 16 Nov. 1899, MARANDA J. PERKINS (b.

16 Oct. 1832; d. 1 Oct. 1910), widow of Wentworth Ricker; no children.

Fryeburg, ME; d. 11 January 1881 (VR Chatham: d. 7 Jan. 1881), in

Chatham; buried with wife at Eastman/Charles Cem., N. Chatham; m., 2

August 1818, MELINDA AMES (b. 27 June 1801, in Epsom, NH; d. 25 March

1866), dau. of Stephen & Lydia (Head) Ames of Stow, ME. Russell

CHANDLER (b. 26 March 1798; d. 15 July 1845), son of Paul & Susan (Hardy)

Chandler of North Chatham. Ten children. [For further data see family

(4) SUSANNA (or SUSAN) CHARLES, dau. of Solomon & Susanna, b. 20 Feb.

1803, probably in Fryeburg, ME; d. __________; buried __________; m., 2

April 1837, in Chatham, MOSES ANDREWS (b. 14 Nov. 1808, in Lovell, ME; d.

28 Sept. 1882, in Stow, ME; buried in parents' lot at Center Lovell

Cem.), son of Samuel & Hannah (Elden) Andrews. Moses was insane and in

1850 he was living with his brother, Stephen, in Lovell. In 1860 he was

living with his brother, Nathan, in Stow; and in 1870 was at the Lovell

Poor Farm. Susanna could not be located in censuses of that area. Four

children, as follows:

(4.1) INGALLS B. ANDREWS, son of Moses & Susanna (Charles) Andrews, b.

about 1837, in ME. Was a resident of Stow, ME, when he enlisted in the

Civil War, serving in the 8th, 31st, and 32nd Maine Infantry Regiments.

No further information.

(4.2) GEORGE ANDREWS, son of Moses & Susanna (Charles) Andrews, d. at

about age 12.

(4.3) SETH ANDREWS, son of Moses & Susanna (Charles) Andrews. No

further information.

(4.4) DENNIS P. ANDREWS, son of Moses & Susanna (Charles) Andrews. He

was a soldier and lost a leg in the Civil War; residing in Plumville, PA,

about 1890. No further information.

(5) SAMUEL CHARLES, son of Solomon & Susanna, b. 29 March 1805

[gravestone says 23 March 1804], probably in Fryeburg, ME; d. 28 Sept.

1889, probably in Fryeburg; buried with wife at Hillcrest Cem., Stow, ME;

m., probably about 1829, MELINDA ABBOTT (b. 16 March 1802, probably in

Stow; d. 11 Feb. 1891, probably in Fryeburg), dau. of Micah & Alice

(Wiley) Abbott. They lived first in Chatham and about 1834 moved to

Stow, where they had apparently built a new house. In 1860 they were in

Lovell, ME, but apparently separated soon after that, for Samuel was

living with his cousin, Samuel Bliss Charles, in Fryeburg in 1870, and

with his grandson, J. Elmore Emerson, in Fryeburg in 1870. Melinda could

not be located in the area censuses for 1870, but in 1880 she was living

with her son, James, in Lovell in 1880. She died in 1891 at the home of

her daughter, Cordelia. Seven children, as follows:

(5.1) MARY ANN CHARLES, dau. of Samuel & Melinda, b. Feb. 1829, probably

in Chatham; d. 14 April 1896, in Fryeburg, ME; buried with husband at

Emerson Cem., Stow, ME; m, 1851, JOSEPH A. EMERSON (b. 12 Aug. 1824, in

Chatham; d. 28 June 1869, probably in Fryeburg), son of Daniel & Lydia

(Whitford) Emerson. Joseph was a farmer, cattle dealer and lumberman.

They lived first in Chatham. In 1860, they were living in Stow; then

probably lived in Lovell, ME. They moved to Fryeburg early in 1868.

Three children: (1) James Elmore Emerson (1852-1899; m. Martha Hobbs);

(2) Vesta Emerson (1855-1933; m. Alvin Wesley McKeen); and Aurilla, or

Lillian Emerson (b.1860; d. about 1950; m. Charles F. Waterhouse).

(5.2) JAMES W. CHARLES, son of Samuel & Melinda, b. 22 Feb. 1833,

probably in Chatham; d. 27 January 1911, in Lovell, ME; buried with wife

at No. 4 Cem., Lovell; m., in Lovell, 17 March 1874, ABALINDA B. KILGORE

(b. 29 April 1834, in Lovell; d. 12 Nov. 1915, in Lovell), dau. of Joseph

& Lucy (Kimball) Kilgore. James was a carpenter and they lived in

Lovell; no children.

(5.3) JEREMY E. CHARLES, son of Samuel & Melinda, b. 8 Sept. 1834; d. 30

March 1861; buried at Wood Cem., Lovell, ME.

(5.4) DAVID E. CHARLES, son of Samuel & Melinda, b. about 1835. No

further information.

(5.5) CORDELIA E. CHARLES, dau. of Samuel & Melinda, b. 9 March 1837; d.

probably in 1895; place of burial unknown; m. WILBUR FISKE WHITAKER (b.

21 July 1830, in Chatham; d. probably in 1918), son of Nathaniel &

Rebecca (Wiley) Whitaker. Six children (See family of Nathaniel Whitaker

for further data).

(5.6) SELO F. C. CHARLES, son of Samuel & Melinda, b. about 1842,

probably in Stow, ME; d. 8 August 1862, at Cedar Mountain, near

Culpepper, VA, during the Civil War. He was a Private in Co. G, 10th

Maine Infantry Regiment.

(5.7) MARILLA CHARLES, dau. of Samuel & Melinda, b. 23 May 1844,

probably in Stow, ME; d. 24 May 1927, in Dover, NH; buried with husband

at Emerson Cem., Stow; m., about 1871, LEONARD EMERSON (b. 12 Nov. 1842,

in Stow; d. 6 July 1913, in Stow), son of William D. & Prudence (Parker)

Emerson. He was a farmer and they lived in Stow. Three children: (1)

Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1872-1956, m. Abbie W. Chandler; (2) William Percy

Emerson, 1874-1936, m. Eda M. Bickford; and (3) Alice Maud Charles

Emerson, 1877-1967, m. Guy Churchill.

(6) OLIVE G. CHARLES, dau. of Solomon & Susanna, b. 21 July 1808,

probably in Fryeburg, ME; d. 19 January 1881, probably in Stow, ME;

buried with husband at Chandler Cem., No. Chatham; m. probably about

1835, ASA W. BRICKETT (b. 1 Sept. 1815, in Stow; d. 30 July 1896), son of

John & Catherine (Whitaker) Brickett. Asa was a farmer at North Stow,

and they had six children: (1) Susan C. Brickett, b about 1836; (2)

Catherine Brickett, 1837-1848; (3) Russell C. Brickett, 1839-1915; m1,

Lauretta Emerson; m2, Susan Emma Rollins; (4) Phebe S. Brickett, b.

about 1841, m. Rendal Dresser; (5) Abigail S. Brickett, 1842-1871; m.

Stephen Chandler [See family of David H. Chandler]; (6) Achsa C.

(7) BLISS CHARLES, son of Solomon & Susanna, b. 5 Nov. 1810, probably in

Eastman/Charles Cem., No. Chatham; m., 17 Dec. 1835, SARAH J. AMES (b. 10

January 1817, in Stow, ME; d. 13 Dec. 1907), dau. of Stephen & Lydia

(Head) Ames. Resided at North Chatham and had ten children (See family

(8) ACHSA CHARLES, dau. of Solomon & Susanna, b. about 1813; d. 20 May

1827, age 14 yrs; buried with parents at Eastman/Charles Cem., No.

Chatham.

(9) SOLOMON CHARLES, JR., son of Solomon & Susanna, b. 7 May 1824,

probably in Chatham; d. __________; m., about 1845, LOUISA T. BRICKETT

(b. 10 Dec. 1826, in Stow, ME; d. __________), dau. of John & Catherine

(Whitaker) Brickett. Solomon was a farmer, living in Chatham in 1850,

and in Stow in 1860. May have moved to the Biddeford, ME, area. At

least five or six children, as follows:

(9.1) GEORGIANA CHARLES, dau. of Solomon Jr. & Louisa, b. 13 Sept. 1846,

probably in Chatham; m. THOMAS WARREN of Biddeford, ME. No further

information.

(9.2) OSWELL CHARLES, son of Solomon Jr. & Louisa, b. 16 Nov. 1847,

probably in Chatham; m. (1st), ELIZA J. MANCHESTER; and had one child:

(1) BLANCHE CHARLES. Oswell m. (2nd), __________; and had seven

children: (2) MERLE CHARLES; (3) OSWELL CHARLES, JR.; (4) RODNEY

(10) ISAAC CHARLES, son of Solomon & Susanna, b. 7 Feb. 1820, probably in

Chatham; d. 13 May 1900, in Fryeburg, ME; buried with wife and daughters

at Pine Grove Cem, Fryeburg; m., 3 Oct. 1843, MARTHA BRICKETT (b. 31 Dec.

1824, in Stow, ME; d. 1 Oct. 1914, probably in Fryeburg), dau. of John &

Catherine (Whitaker) Brickett. Isaac was a farmer, and they were living

in North Chatham in the censuses of 1850-1870. In 1880 they were in

Stow, ME, and apparently went to live with their daughter, Kate, in

Fryeburg sometime before 1900. Two children, as follows:

(10.1) HARRIET F. CHARLES, apparently known as Hattie, dau. of Isaac &

Martha, b. 20 Dec. 1845, in Chatham; d. 1928; buried in parents lot with

husband and daughter at Pine Grove Cem., Fryeburg, ME; m., 27 Nov. 1870,

CHARLES K. BICKFORD (b. Jan. 1841, in Freedom, NH; d. 2 June 1904, in

Fryeburg), son of Horatio & Lucy (Rumery) Bickford of Freedom, NH, and

Stow, ME. They lived on the farm of his father in Stow until 1892, when

they moved to Fryeburg Village. One child: Zenna Bickford, b. 21 Dec.

1873, in Stow; d. 1952; m., 1907, Frank H. Peterson.

(10.2) EMMA KATE CHARLES, apparently known as Kate, dau. of Isaac &

Martha, b. 17 April 1853, in Chatham; d. 6 Feb. 1936; buried with parents

and husband at Pine Grove Cem., Fryeburg, ME; m., 12 July 1883, FRANK L.

MARK (b.1858, probably in Portland, ME; d. 1933). According to Barrows'

History of Fryeburg, Frank "...was an energetic businessman...," who ran

a grocery store in Fryeburg Village for several years, and in 1895 he and

Edward E. Hastings purchased the Oxford House hotel in Fryeburg, which

they ran until 1896. He later was a manager for the Heffley School in

Brooklyn, NY, where they resided. They owned a house on Elm Street in

Fryeburg, where they lived summers, and eventually retired there. No

children.
