SYLVANUS DAVIS;
     son of John, Jr. and Anna (Allen) Davis of Barnstable, MA, and
Gorham, ME;
     born about May 1766, in Barnstable, Massachusetts;
     died 11 December 1858; buried with his second wife at Hillcrest
Cemetery, Stow, ME;
     married (1st), 19 November 1789:

          HANNAH GORHAM;
               daughter of __________;
               born __________;
               died June 1807, in Buxton, ME.

     married (2nd), 24 April 1808:

          PHEBE McDONALD;
               possibly daughter of John and Hannah McDonald of Buxton,
ME;
               born about January 1766;
               died 27 June 1841; buried at Hillcrest Cemetery, Stow,
ME.

     Sylvanus settled first in Gorham, Maine, where his first two
children were born; and before 1799, he moved to Buxton, Maine.  He
settled at Chatham Center between 1810 and 1820.  In 1840 he was
probably
living with is son, Abner Davis, in Stow, Maine.

Children of Sylvanus Davis:

(1)  EBENEZER G. DAVIS, son of Sylvanus & Hannah, b. 4 Sept. 1790, in
Gorham, ME; m., 17 May 1818, in Fryeburg, ME, CATHERINE PROCTOR of
Fryeburg.  They were in Chatham in the censuses of 1820-1840.  Eight
children recorded in Chatham, as follows:

(1.1)  SYLVANUS GORHAM DAVIS, son of Ebenezer & Catherine, b. 9 April
1819.

(1.2)  JOSIAH FREEMAN DAVIS, son of Ebenezer & Catherine, b. 13 Jan.
1821; d. 29 July 1822.

(1.3)  JOSIAH FREEMAN DAVIS, son of Ebenezer & Catherine, b. 13 March
1823.

(1.4)  MARK HILL DAVIS, son of Ebenezer & Catherine, b. 5 July 1825.

(1.5)  STEPHEN HOBBS DAVIS, son of Ebenezer & Catherine, b. 29 Nov.
1827.

(1.6)  LUCIAN HARPER DAVIS, son of Ebenezer & Catherine, b. 7 Feb. 1830.

(1.7)  WILLIAM HALL DAVIS, son of Ebenezer & Catherine, b. 30 Dec. 1833.

(1.8)  EDMOND SHAW DAVIS, son of Ebenezer & Catherine, b. 11 January
1841.

(2)  SARAH HOFF DAVIS, dau. of Sylvanus & Hannah, b. 4 March 1792, in
Gorham, ME; probably living unmarried with her parents in Chatham in
1820.

(3)  URIAH HALL DAVIS, son of Sylvanus & Hannah, b. 23 March 1799, in
Buxton, ME; d. 22 February 1837; place of burial unknown; m. NANCY
WALKER
(b. 11 March 1803; d. 9 Nov. 1883, in Wisconsin), dau. of John & Nancy
(Cox) Walker of Stow, ME.  They lived in Stow and had two children,
which
follow.  After the death of Uriah, Nancy married (2nd), in 1840,
Jeremiah
Eaton of Chatham, and they lived in South Chatham and finally moved to
New London, Wisconsin.

(3.1)  CHARLES A. DAVIS, son of Uriah & Nancy, b. 6 Nov. 1828, in Stow,
ME; d. 6 Feb. 1902; m. ELIZABETH MERRILL of Lovell, ME; living in Lovell

in 1854; four children:  (1) Arthur Davis; (2) Roscoe Davis; (3) Merrill

Davis; and (4) Katy Davis.

(3.2)  JOSEPH WALKER DAVIS, son of Uriah & Nancy, b. 20 Nov. 1835, in
Stow, ME; d. 14 Nov. 1922, in Etam, Preston County, West Virginia;
buried
at Etam, W. Va.; m., 16 Nov. 1867, SARAH ANN GRAHAM (b. 14 Nov. 1843, in

Rowelsburg, W. Va; d. 15 March 1915, in Etam, W. Va), dau. of John S. &
Sarah (Elliott) Graham.  Six children:  (1) Charles Walton Davis,
1872-1940, m. Isminnie I. Feather; (2) Warren Graham Davis, 1875-1922,
m.
Laura Wells; (3) Willis Clifford Davis, d. 1940, m. Minnie Murdock; (4)
May Davis, 1870-1948, m. Kelley Carrico; (5) Martha Davis, 1882-1884;
and
(6) Ethel Howard Davis, 1885-1976, m. George S. Gall.

(4)  DANIEL H. DAVIS, son of Sylvanus & Hannah, b. 21 Sept. 1801, in
Buxton, ME; d. 1866, in Berlin, NH; m., 1825, __________ Charles (sister

to Dorothy, who m. John Knight of Fryeburg, ME).  He learned the stone
mason trade from John Knight, and soon after his marriage in 1825, he
settled in Shelburne, NH.  On Dec. 31, 1831, he moved to Berlin, NH,
where he lived the remainder of his life.  He served many years as town
clerk and selectman of Berlin.  At least one child, probably more, as
follows:

(4.1)  BAILEY K. DAVIS, son of Daniel, b. about 1825, probably in
Shelburne, NH.  In 1897 he published an informative and amusing history
of Berlin, NH, entitled "Traditions and Recollections of Berlin".

(5)  LOT DAVIS, son of Sylvanus & Hannah, b. 16 Oct. 1803, in Buxton,
ME;
m., 27 January 1831, in Chatham, LUCINDY WALKER.  He was of Gorham, NH,
in 1836, when he sold a parcel of land in Stow, ME.  No further
information.

(6)  JOANNA DAVIS, dau. of Sylvanus & Phebe, b. 3 Feb. 1809, in Buxton,
ME; d. 30 Aug. 1864; buried with parents at Hillcrest Cem., Stow, ME;
m.,
about 1849, as his second wife, (GEORGE) BENJAMIN HARTFORD (b. about
1807; d. 23 Feb. 1870; buried with first wife at Wood Cem., Lovell, ME.
He was a blacksmith and innkeeper at Lovell Village.  No children.
Hartford's first wife, by whom he had several children, was Jane
McAllister, who died in 1848.

(7)  ABNER DAVIS, son of Sylvanus & Phebe, b. 21 March 1811; m., about
1837, DOLLY ABBOTT (b. 18 Dec. 1808, in Stow, ME), dau. of Simeon & Mary

(Day) Abbott.  Abner was a farmer, tavern and store-keeper, Justice of
the Peace, Stow town treasurer, and Methodist minister.  He lived first
in Stow; and in deeds dated 1852 and 1853 he was a resident of Milan,
NH., although his wife was living with her brother, Noyes Abbott, in
Stow
in 1860.  At least two children, as follows:

(7.1)  EDWARD H. DAVIS, son of Abner & Dolly, b. 9 Nov. 1838, in Stow,
ME.

(7.2)  EMILY DAVIS, dau. of Abner & Dolly, b. 14 Oct. 1841, in Stow, ME.
