ORIGIN
Syndey University, 12th March 1999
by Leigh Tran

here is a less romanticised review of origin, bug has to be forgiven since he is usyd boy through and through *grins* as a impartial outsider however, i do concur with most of what he says. LOL

event organised by the students who love their music for sure. can't deny the passion of the students who organised this event. and it was good, the music was thumping but i think it could have been a  premier event if it wasn't for the disappointing turn out. nothing to do with the organisers or the quality of music becoz that i have to say, was simply outstanding. drum n bass is a hard thing to get into, but i felt the dj's made the effort to mix it up, to the extent that it kept a high level of interest from the newbies, but also careful not to alienate the serious punters.

and i have to single out dj aztek. he was the best i saw (i had to leave relatively early as well, under the impression that i had to work. pah!) and even then, i only saw about a third of his two sets. being the headliner, he played dnb at 6am, so i missed that, but his earlier set in the smaller room was just so gosh-darn funky!! wicked hip hop beats, as they say. he even managed to impress my novice friend james who recognised a hip hop gem :)

but what most impressed me was that aztek was also the organiser for the night. what a legend! for a uni student, he pretty much has HIS act together! of course i am just saying this becoz i myself am a lazy good-fer-nuthin arts student who spends far too much time on the net...hahah

as for the others that i saw, most were consistently good, with some mixing up the traditional dark and heavy drum n bass with some old skool breaks, and some teckno even. wooo oooh!!

i'm not quite sure about the numbers however, 200 might have been the peak but i don't think the peak lasted for a very long time. certainly the dance party disorientate that was held at macquarie uni the week earlier. i don't know about the drinks becoz i owe bug one! LOL but i know water was cheaper here than at macq! once again though, i think the lack of people at certain times was a little bit sad to see becoz they were missing out on class acts and i think more people who are up for it heightens the atmosphere.

and yes, thankfully there were no glowstiks and no whistles *grins*
