Custard
The Metro, Sydney, 6 August 1999
by Jo aka Kevin aka "the Adam Spencer stalker"

Ok I'll start this review by stating a simple fact, I am a big Custaro fan, they can do very little wrong in my book. After saying that I can say without prejudice that This Concert Rocked!!!!

Next I must say that the crowd of punters at a Custard gig are a little different to that of say You Am I or Powderfinger. Firstly, they are not their to perve on a Tim Rogers or Bernard Fanning. So the line up at the front of the stage hadn't started till five mins before they were due on stage. Secondly, Custaro fans are like the band, too cool to smell their own shit, we hang out, sang along with DJ Dr Love, even a couple of dudes danced, but no way is anyone admitting the fact that they are near hysterical with excitement to hear the new songs live (for the second time if they were here at the Metro earlier this year for their album launch).

Anyway DJ Dr Love was funky, but we wanted Custaro. With a big build-up from the Dr, out came the lads from Brisvegas. They came straight on stage and launched into the new songs. Man, they were seriously on fire. The crowd loved it. It was the biggest mosh I had ever seen for Custard (not counting Homebake) and Uncle Davey loved it too. A beautiful cover of "When Doves cry" by Mr Glen made my day and confused the kids, but they were happy with a cover of, as Uncle Davey called it, "the first love song Custard ever wrote, that had finally acheived world wide success" "la viva la loca" or whatever that Ricky Martin song is called.

They played a heap of favs for the old fans, including Pack yer Suitcases. All of the new songs they were all received well, especially Ringo, with a mad free-for-all middle. The saddest thing about the night was the end. Only one encore and the DJ had begun again! But I can't complain I had almost forgetten how many great songs were on Technology, they just seemed to keep coming. And I was especially happy with the second last song. My friend with me had just said, "it's about time they played apartment" and off the song went, stiring the audince to max leading well into the 'old la viva love song' that got to see Matty and Uncle Dave playing at dueling guiatars and some mighty fine work from Glen and Paul.

Top gig I give it 20 out of 10!

I also need to say of the night that I began to be known by my friends as the Adam Spencer stalker. I met him at Glenworth Valley last year (prior to Custard) when he made me go onstage and 'assist' a self mutilating comedian. I saw him once again recently at the Wil Anderson gig. Both times I spoke with him and he got a good laugh at my and my friends expence. But at Custard I flippently commented on him following me, much to his suprise (as he has obviously no idea who the fuck I am).

This continued recently at the Ben Folds Five concert at the Hordern last week. (another FANTASTIC gig, but sadly, not as good as Custard as half the punters knew no more songs than Brick!!)

I saw Adam outside as I was buying a water, I was a very sick and therefore a very hoarse girl after the gig (I had gone through a pack of lozenges just so I could sing along - no heckliing for me or screaming at that gig), so I see him and once again comment as though to an old acquaintance (as I have spoekn to him three whole times!!!!) "Bloody hell I see you everywhere!" he looked at me as though It wouldn't have suprised him if I had been packing heat! poor guy, he looked terrified and ran off as fast as he could, but to my astonishment (the flu makes me stupid) and the vast amusement of my friend.
