Nine Daughters and Goddesses of the

god Zeus and Mnemosyme, Goddess of Memory

 

The Muses presided over the arts and sciences and

were believed to inspire all artists especially

poets, philosophers and musicians

 

The Muses lived together on Mount Parnassus

The Muses were wild until tamed by Apollo who tamed them

and taught them ways to express themselves.

 

The Muses did not have names or personalities,

but later were all assigned names and specific traits

They sat near the throne of Zeus, king of the gods,

and sang of his greatness and the origin of the world

and its inhabitants and of the glorious deeds of great heroes.
