Write Or Wrong 1 The Word is “Origin” I love origin stories. Really, I do. It’s a beautiful thing to behold the beginnings of something. From the heroic transformation of Peter parker into the amazing Spider-Man to the macabre physical de-evolution of Gregor Samsa in Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis,” the origins of things just appeal to me. Think about it, there is just something so very magical about the genesis of things. Wouldn’t you like to know about the origins of Stonehenge or of how our universe came into existence? Do you get my point? Origins are just plain cool. So, have I built up the suspense? Are you clamoring to know the amazing story of how this column began? Well then, true believer, prepare to be completely let down! It all began on a quiet night at home. My younger brother was watching a re-run of Star Trek: Voyager in his room while my parents were asleep in their room. Meanwhile, I was in my room scouring the Internet for any information on the recently released Spider-Man film. (Riveting story, isn’t it?) Suddenly, my pal Troy Doney, in his guise as the “Survival Horrorist,” signed on MSN messenger. We conversed about the usual: comics, girlfriends, movies and more comics. Did I mention that we discussed comics? Anyway, Troy pops the unexpected question of (cue drum heavy, suspense-filled music) whether I would like to take over “Obskewed View” if and when he leaves. Thinking that he wouldn’t be leaving the column anytime soon, I agreed. What a set up! Flash forward a few days and picture me sitting at my desk, yet again, surfing the ‘net. Checking through my e-mail, I spot a message from Troy. I read it and find out that he’s leaving the column and that I would be starting soon in his stead. Bastard. That wonky bastard just up and left! He left me with very little time to prepare myself and with finals coming up and my responsibilities to my college newspaper, I thought I might not be able to write the column. Well, here I am, writing this column. School is almost over, I have two articles in this months’ paper (including a movie review of Panic Room), and I plan on seeing Spider-Man a second time. So, I know what you’re thing: “What’s this dude all about?” Well, I’m here to write. In the coming weeks you will all learn why American guys aren’t attractive, why life would be better if we all spontaneously broke out into song and dance from time to time, and why you should be giving me all of you money. Well, maybe not ALL your money. And while I think I’m gonna’ like writing this column on a weekly basis, I also think it’s gonna be a pain in the ass. It is my gift. It is my curse. Who am I? Do you really want to know? I am Spider-Ma . . . err . . . Rick Carrion, writer of the brand new column, “Write or Wrong.” So folks, I look forward to writing stuff for you to read and hope to hear some feedback about the good, bad and ugly of my column. Later! |
