The Magician, the Hermit, and the Chariot

*Many thanks to my lovely girlfriend Sarah for helping me out with this column. Your very existence continues to inspire me.

Yeah, so I know what you’re thinking now that you’ve read the title of this weeks column. “What is this? A column on the Lord of the Rings Trilogy? A new Conan the Barbarian epic?” No, those are not the topics. This week is a rather weird topic that actually got me thinking about our place in the universe. Is destiny real? Do we hold the keys to our own fates? And how do those Pizza Hutt people make such yummy food? Ok, well maybe not the last question, but you get the point.

Just recently, I was at Sarah’s graduation party. As the hours ticked away and the attendance dwindled to a select few, one of the mothers decided to offer Tarot Card readings. Now, I’m not exactly a believer in the forces of conjuring, divination and such, but what followed seriously creeped me out. I

decided that I would get my cards read. I did so out of sheer curiosity and as such, didn’t expect anything in the way of accuracy during the reading. So I sat down, shuffled the deck as ordered and proceeded to have my current life and possible future told to me.

Now bare in mind, this lady has met me a handful of times at best, and doesn’t really know me well at all. She told me that I am a being of chaos. I am a person ruled by logic. Yet I try to counter that aspect of my life with my great capacity for emotion. Yes, I know that this is a very broad statement, but it does describe me quite well. Ask anyone that knows me well; it’s the perfect description for me. As we moved on, she told me of how my life seems to be going very well, except for one mini-crisis, which seems to be a constant thorn in my side. It is something that has affected me for years and continues to do so; many times without my knowledge. She said that when I want to be, I can be very strong-willed, and in this case, that fortitude would show itself and I would overcome my obstacle.

Yes, yet again this all sounds like a blanket statement that would lend itself well to describing many peoples lives. But it felt real. She told me about my future and how I already knew whom I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. She knew that I would make my living through a form of creative expression. Goddamn, she knew that I am a very moody person. Seriously, how does a person know these things? She could not, for the life of me, know these things through other people.

Also, throughout the week following the reading, I continued to get signals and messages that alluded to what she said about my logical and emotional sides. I know, if someone plants a thought in your head, they can get you to think almost anything. The self-fulfilling prophecy mode of thought is easy to place in peoples minds, but honestly, the fact that that stuff popped up made me stop and think. Are there people out there with senses and abilities beyond those of the mortal coil? Is our future already unfolding in a predetermined course? Is there one person out there, waiting for us to meet them so we can live happily ever after together? I mean, a small event like a Tarot Card reading can really call into question some things.

Just look at it. When I got the reading, I got three major cards of importance. Well, I got a few more than three, but I can’t remember them all, can I? The three cards were the Chariot, the Hermit and the Magician. The funny thing is that these three cards kind of remind me of myself to begin with. The Hermit is the Rick of old. A recluse who shunned attention and seriously lacked social skills. The Magician is the new Rick. Confident, social, and a rather quick-witted bastard. The Chariot represents my need for a car. Yeah, pathetic, I know. But I digress. The actually have meanings. The Chariot is a card representing war, vengeance, and conflicting influence. The Hermit is prudence, withdrawal, and caution. The Magician is a card of self-confidence willpower, and skilful creativity. So I look at these and I realize that these are all representative of the current situation of which the Tarot reader informed me of. She was dead-on. So I continue the question: Is there more to this world than what science can tell us? Is there truly magic? Destiny? It makes you think that maybe there really is a higher power at work. No, not god, not Zeus or Odin. Not even Buddha. I mean if there is just more than one world. If there is a spiritual world that is a sister dimension to our own. Yeah, I know, it sounds like something out of a comic book or a bad sci-fi movie. But think about it; before scientists discovered atoms, and quarks, and neutrons, did we know that there were greater forces driving the rules of our planet? If there is a subatomic level of life, then why can’t there be a “sub-physical” level of life. A level that can’t be reached through ordinary scientific means. A world apart that can only be reached through the natural abilities locked within us. It sounds like a whacked-out idea, I know. But just think about it, isn’t it possible?

So, with that I end my rant. Whether you think my thoughts have some merit or are a crock of shit is up to you. You can choose to believe that we are the be all end all, or you can put your faith in the idea that we are part of a much grander scheme. Either way, you believe in something. And in the end, I guess that’s all that really counts.
