Life or Something Like It (Not the Crappy Movie)

*This column is dedicated to the lovely Sarah Moore. She's heading to Nicaragua for three weeks to pursue her dream of helping people. How? She's going to be helping build a library and teaching children. Admirable, huh? Yeah, well that's what she's all about. This one's for you, luv.

I'm only twenty-one years old so I won't pretend that I have even the faintest idea of how the world works, but this is just my little rant.

You grow up and as a little kid your parents try and teach you right from wrong. You try and apply those teachings to how you live and grow from there. Adolescence comes around and life becomes an angst-ridden hell. There are those days where the world is perfect and the next day, well, there are those days you feel like the world is coming to an end. Fear, loathing, love, and friendship. They are all encapsulated in adolescence. But that soon comes to an end and you are thrust into young adulthood.

The trials and tribulations that adolescence puts us through, while gruelling, are nothing like what we go through in early adulthood. It's a time where you have to make those big choices in your life. The time where you decide what type of man/woman you are going to become. It's a time of radical evolution. Picking your own classes in college. Deciding on a major. Trying to scrounge up enough money for rent. Just finding out what you want to do with your life is an odyssey. And maybe, just maybe, among all the activity in your life, you'll find that one person. Among all the truly mundanely chaotic crap that this life requires you to go through, you'll find the person that you know completes you. They make all that crap just disappear. But then again, not all of us are so lucky.

But what am I saying? I'm just pontificating on a lot of things that I have almost no experience in. But you all understand what I'm saying, right? The wise and powerful Yoda once said: “Do or do not. There is no try.” Well, I say bollocks to that. Life is about trying. How are you going to know anything about yourself if you don't try? How are you going to know if you're a competent journalist if you don't try your hand at the school paper? How are you going to know if that cute redhead likes you if you don't go up and talk to her? How are you going to know if you got the job unless you actually apply? Yeah, I think I made my point clear.

A lot of people out there stand around talking about their missed opportunities. They whine about how if only they tried, their life might have been different. So take heart, reader. Try everything. Have no fear and attempt those things that you want to do yet fear. Because if you don't, you just might end up missing the best thing in your life. Am I being a bit melodramatic? Yeah, maybe. But the truth is, I found one of the best things in my life because I made the uncharacteristic move of actually trying. And you know what, I'm glad I did. So there ya go, a first hand account that just backs up my little rant.

Oh man, I'm getting too into this! I'm starting to feel like that razor-grinned Tony Robbins-dude. Not good. Gotta counteract this self-righteous crap. Okay, next week: The Wonders of Porn. Just kidding. Up next: American Guys Aren't Attractive.
