Write Or Wrong 7 The Nearness of You *This weeks column is dedicated to my Mom and Dad. Thanks for showing me what a loving relationship can be like. Have you ever met that person that you just connect with? That person whose eyes you can look into and discern what they’re thinking? That person whose very existence seems to validate and support your own? Yes? No? Well, depending on what you say, life can be very different. If you say yes, then you are privy to one of the greatest forces known to man: Love. If not, then you are still waiting to feel it. To experience it’s positively intoxicating effects. So, if you said yes, then you know that it is a force that drives you. A force that makes you want to be a better person. A force that completes you. It is both subtle and blatantly obvious. Love makes all feelings pale in comparison. It makes the world make sense. If you said no, then you fall into the category of those who wander through life unexposed to love. Yes, their family and friends love them, and that’s a beautiful thing, but they haven’t yet found the other type of love. Is this a bad thing? Hell no. In fact, this is a rather great state of being. It frees you up to experience things and eventually find love. And I know what you’re saying, “Rick, not everyone needs to fall in love! Why are you being such an ass?” And if you ask this, you’re right. You don’t need it. But when push comes to shove, in the experience category, it’s one of the most fulfilling experiences humanly possible. Go ahead, climb a mountain, jump from an airplane, walk across burning coals; because there isn’t a feeling like looking across a crowded room and seeing that person. Of wrapping your arms around them ... and never wanting to let go. Now tell me that’s not a great feeling. So, in the end, I guess that I’m endorsing the concept of love. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t think all of you should go out and look for that guy/girl/whatever that you want to spend the rest of your life with. On the contrary, don’t look. Just go about your life as you usually do. Then, when you least expect it, it’ll hit you like a runaway midget. Okay, maybe not a runaway midget, but something a lot bigger. Not a train, because let’s be honest, a runaway train would kill you. It’s more like a runaway bicycle. You’ll definitely survive it, but it’ll leave you pretty damn sore. Oh, that sounded kind wrong. But, hey, you get the point right? Be open to it, but don’t actively pursue it. When it comes calling, you’ll know it. It’s like one of my favourite quotes: “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love, and to be loved in return.” Fed up yet? Yeah. Good, because I’m done. Next week I’ll get back to the less emotional topic of Identity. Interested? Well come back next week. You’ll be glad you did. |
