Lawlesness and Chaos in Chile
It is true, crime is in the rise in Chile with no end in sight. It has not reached latin american proportions yet, one can still walk the streets at night, but criminals keep acting with impunity.
There are many reasons for these, but these are mostly political, being the Socialist government's fault who is soft on crime. The Death penalty was abolished last year, and Carabineros (police) was moved from the Ministry of Defense, to Ministry of the Interior. Thus this politicizes the institution giving the leftist politicians absolute control. This has crated a wekaer instituion pleased with pleasing politicians who put them in their jobs. Thus Carabineros as an institution is no longer independent as was from 1973-2001. This is shameful and a victory for mediocrity.
Apart from that, ever since Judges led by Judge Jaime Guzman, and inspired in the pathetic figure of spanish judge baltazar garzon, have decided to "interpret" laws rather than follow them as they are required (and as they have been doing since earlies times). Thus this means that former Military personnel who were doing their jobs of defending the nation from marxism, are now put in jail because they did "dirty inteligence" work (which Intelligence agency in the world isnt dirty, we wonder?). Back in 1973 and onwards, there was a dangerous security problem posed by guerrillas and other communist fighters who took arms against the government. They had to be exterminated at any cost if the country was going to enter the 21st century. Now these courageous soldiers and policemen are, for example, being placed in trial because of a communist that was killed robbing a bank (among many other cases where armed communist killers were shot by police or the military). Judging them is illegal under the Amnesty Law (as this law also covers some members of guerrilla movements which no longer exist), and the purpose of this law was to avoid just what is happening now: that society doesnt sue each other for being a member of the military nor of the guerrilla movements. This was to stop people from seeking revenge as they are doing now. Before Judges respected the law, now they are passing over the law because of the "new interpretation" of laws, which leaves it up to their judgement. Yet while they do this, "justice" looks the other way and lets petty criminals and thugs get off the hook. Former communist criminals, and drug criminals are also let loose because of "unsubstantial evidence", or because they were allowed "momentary freedom" if they paid a fee. Thus of course, these criminals get away. The whole justice system needs to understand that its not the police's fault who catch them and then are turned loose by the corrupt judges. This "modus operandi" is supported by our inept socialist government, in their view of what they call "justice".
That is not the only problem. Chilean society, most importantly the lousy government that is supposed to represent us, need to understand that students in constant revolt is not normal nor "democratic". These students like the Philosophy students at the "Pedagogia" are all influenced by marxism and other minority groups who seek violence as a means to change society. These are the same thugs who destroy things, fight policemen, throw stones and molotov cocktails, and destroy public and private property. However the problem is that irresponsible politicians of course the socialists and communists all show their "solidarity" with these criminals. If the police (as most likely will happen) try to enter the university and disperse them or better yet, arrest them, they not only will fight back, but will often accuse the police of "repression", and of wanting to express their "democratic rights" of dissent. One thing is to not agree with the government or society, another is to make an ass of yourself by hurting yourself and others. These groups know they can act with complete impunity, since they know that they are protected by the government, some of the political class (those of the left of course), and know that gov opinion is on their side. Thus not only should these students be banned and kicked out of those universities (unless they sit and learn and party), but they should be put in jail, their records set straight for future employment of who they are and what they did. The police should keep tabs on them, and the political class, specially the corrupt and thuggish left wing should understand the clear divide between democratic expression and violent vandalism. Not only that but they should understand that universities are centers of learning and expanding ideas, not hot beds of communist extremism. Its true this happens less and less but the government and Congress should stand firm and stop protecting them and reasoning their behavior politically. Hopefully after the right wing gets elected after 2006, these actions will stop, and common sense will guide the internal and external policies of the government. The police should have ample powers to act at will to stop terrorism, criminality and not be punished or slaped in the hand each time it tries to do its job. How different from the efficient times during General Pinochet's time as president! Return Carabineros to the Defense Ministry! Let them do their job!
