Foster was born around 1971, almost certainly to Eve (A9). He was still very small when the study began, so we're nearly certain about both pieces of information. Foster is also one of the few whales we know the father of. Thanks to genetic testing, we know that Foster's dad was Nigei (R3).
Foster was born into a very well known family. Everyone knew Eve, and everyone, but everyone, knew Top Notch, his big brother.
For a long time, Foster was only known as Top Notch's younger brother. He was the little fin that was tucked between Eve's scarred back and Top Notch's well known fin.
Eventually, he got his name, and around 1985, he matured, his fin growing to match Top Notch's. At the same time, his family began to spend more time away from the rest of A5 pod.
In 1990, when Foster was 19, his mom died and washed up on the beach. For the next few days, he and his brother wandered around that area, calling out. The rest of the pod moved on, but they stayed.
They wandered between matrilines after that, then disappeared for nearly a year.
In 1999, they spent most of their time with their possible sister Licka and her family.
Then in 2000, Top Notch died, and Foster was the only member of his family left.
He stuck mostly with Licka's family, but he also travelled alone sometimes.
In 2001, both Licka and Foster died, and the A9 matriline died out. Foster died in January.
