Okisollo was born almost certainly in 1971, to Stripe (A23). When he was born, the family was made up of grandma A7, mom Stripe, and sister or brother A21.
When the study began in 1973, Okisollo was still very small, a young calf tucked next to his mother. The same year, he lost his older sibling when A21 was hit by a ferry. He may have been the calf that followed behind during that incident (see A21's page).
In 1977, the matriarch A7 passed away, and the A7 matriline became the A23 matriline. The same year, Stripe gave birth to A29, Okisollo's little brother/sister.
Sadly, the little one didn't last long. In 1980, the three year old calf died, leaving Okisollo alone with his mother once more.
They were soon joined by Okisollo's little sister, Ripple, when she was born the next year. For the next nine years, the three traveled as a family.
During that time, Okisollo matured. His fin spouted and he became practically twice the size of his mom. His fin was very wide at the base, and his saddle patch was oddly positioned.
In 1993, Okisollo gained a little brother with the birth of Fife. Then the year after, he became an uncle when Ripple gave birth to A63.
The little calf didn't make it, however, and A63 died the same year.
In 1996, Ripple gave birth to her second calf, Midsummer. She hasn't given birth since then-she may be following her mom's example, considering Stripe waited nine years to have Fife.
In spring of 2000, Okisollo lost his mom when Stripe passed away. Not long after, in 2001, when he was 30 years old, Okisollo himself disappeared and was declared dead.
We watched him grow from a tiny little calf, into a mature male, and then he passed away. He is one of the few whales we have watched the entire, complete life of.
