Scarlett was born around 1947, probably to B11. She was probably B11's first calf, and her eldest that survived to the start of the study.
Around 1951, B11 probably had her second calf, Scarlett's younger brother Hooker. The next year, Scarlett gained another playmate when her grandmother (who is unknown) had her uncle Baronet.
In 1958, when Scarlett was 11 years old, she got another brother when B11 had B3. In 1963, B11 had another male with B5.
In 1964, Scarlett was 17 and mature. That was the year she had her first known calf, a male named Izumi. Scarlett proved to be a good, attentive mother.
In 1973, we started to get to know B-Pod. The same year, Scarlett gained her last sibling, brother Bauza. Sadly, she also lost her mother. Now she was the matriarch. She also probably stepped up to take care of Bauza, being the only female in the pod. Other instances when young calves are left orphaned often result in the older sister playing the part of mom. Especially since Scarlett had just had a calf of her own.
In 1979, when she was 32, she had her second calf, and first that we are sure of, a male named Slingsby. Around the same time, Izumi began to mature.
In the early 1980s, Scarlett lost two of her brothers when B3 and B5 passed away. In 1984, she had her third calf, Nakwakto. Three years later, she had her fourth, Yuculta.
In 1991, Scarlett had her first (and so far only) female calf, Klaskish. Izumi was fully grown and Slingsby was beginning to mature at the time. The next year, the young matriarch lost her youngest brother when Bauza died.
In 1995, Scarlett had her last calf, Raven.
In 1998, Scarlett's last brother, Hooker, died, as well as her uncle.
Scarlett is an amazing mother. She has raised six whales to maturity and cared for them. And with all those guys, I bet they were a handful!
In 2002, Scarlett lost her first calf when Izumi passed away at age 38. Two years later, however, the pod gained a welcome addition with the birth of Scarlett's first granddaughter, B16!
Scarlett worried researchers when she was observed wheezing in 2002. However, she seems to be all right for now. We'll be watching to see if anything develops from this.
She is now 58. Five of her six children are alive and healthy, along with her grandchild.
