Siwiti was born in 1983 to Yakat, her thrid calf. When she was born, her family consisted of Yakat, her sister Skagit, her brother Skeena, her aunt Kelsey, her cousin Sutlej (who was the same age as her), her grandma A10 and her great-uncle A4. Whew! That's a lot of whales!
The same year, however, her grandmother died, leaving her mom and Kelsey in charge of the pod. The next year, her great-uncle also died. Two years after that, Kelsey and Yakat began to spend time apart.
Siwiti was a playful and energetic calf. Luckily Yakat was a very patient and indulgent mother. When Siwiti was four, she got a niece, Kiltik, when Skagit gave birth. Now she had another calf to play with!
Three years later, she got a new sister, Nahwitti. And two years after that, another niece, Racey!
No doubt the three young ones had a lot of fun together. But Siwiti, as cheerful as she was, was growing up.
In 1996, when Siwiti was 13 years old, she gave birth to her first calf, A65. Sadly, she never got to pass on her energetic ways to this little one. The same year, both she and the calf vanished and were declared dead.
Siwiti was a beautiful, playful whale who captured the hearts of everyone who saw her jump and frolic. There's even a book based on her life, by Alexandra Morton, called Siwiti: A Whale's Story!
