Bare Facts: Male ~ Born 1979 ~ Mother Scarlett ~ Father Unknown ~ Children Unknown ~ ID Very wavy fin; straightening up
Slingsby was born in 1979 to Scarlett (B7). He was her second calf and the first to be born during the study. When he was born, the family consisted of him, his older brother Izumi, his mom, his great-uncle Baronet, and his uncles Hooker, B3, B5, and Bauza.
In 1984, when Slingsby was 5, he got another brother, Nakwakto, and three years later, his third brother, Yuculta, joined the mix.
Izumi was already mature when Slingsby was born, so for years he spent most of his time with his younger brothers. In 1991, he got his first sister, Klaskish.
Slingsby began to sprout at age 10, which is unusual for most orcas, but not for the Bs. Even at that age, his fin was extremely wobbly.
Over the next five years, Nakwakto and Yuculta's fins sprouted as well, and they could finally play with the older boys. Sadly, in 1998, Slingsby lost his uncle Hooker and great-uncle Baronet when they passed away.
In 2002, Slingsby lost his eldest brother. Izumi died at age 38.
In 2004, he got his first niece/nephew when Klaskish gave birth to B16, who will be named soon.
Now, Slingsby is the eldest male in the B-pod. He is very easily recognized because his fin has a very distinctive shape. Since the 1999 publication of the ID book, his fin began to tilt, and by 2005, it was leaning over at 30 degrees. In addition to that, his fin was VERY wavy, giving it the appearance of a twisted corkscrew that's falling over. However, in 2006, to the surprise of everyone, his fin began to straighten up! This has never been seen before.
On one of the OrcaLab highlights DVDs, Slingsby and his brothers are seen calmly following the A5 females. Slingsby is a notable presence, his huge twisted dorsal banking sharply as he turns.
In 2006, Slingsby lost his younger brother Nakwakto.
Now, he is 26, and he is still going strong.
