The Fasti Triumphales record that Cn. Fulvius Centumalas, cos. A.U.C. 525 = 229, celebrated a triumph on a.d. X Kal. Quint. of this year for a naval victory in the first Illyrian War fought during his consulate. On a consular term starting on Kal. Mai. there was about 7 weeks between the end of his term and his triumph; on a term starting on Id. Mart. there was about 14. Polybius 2.12.3 states that peace was concluded in the early spring, while he was still consul, i.e. in March 228. There being no obvious reason to delay the triumph, we would expect that the peace was concluded pretty close to the end of his consular term.
Since there were 7 intercalations between A.U.C. 537 = 217 and A.U.C. 564 = 190, the most recent year whose dates are certain, the following table gives the possible date ranges for Kal. Mai. A.U.C. 526 assuming 7-18 intercalations after this date and before A.U.C. 564 = 190.
Number of Intercalations Number of intercalated days Kal. Mai. A.U.C. 526
A.U.C. 526-5647 154-161 19-24 Aug. 228
8 176-184 27 July - 4 Aug. 228
9 198-207 4-13 July 228
10 220-230 11-21 June 228
11 242-253 19-30 May 228
12 264-276 26 Apr. - 8 May 228
13 286-299 3-16 Apr. 228
14 308-322 11-25 Mar. 228
15 330-345 16 Feb. - 3 Mar. 228
16 352-368 24 Jan. - 9 Feb. 228
17 374-391 1-18 Jan. 228
18 396-414 9-27 Dec. 228The Polybian synchronism gives us that there at most 14 intercalations between this year and A.U.C. 564 = 190. The fewer the number of intercalations, the longer the delay between the conclusion of peace and Fulvius' triumph. While this indication is not strong, it favours c. 12-14 intercalations. The possible solutions are given in blue.
