He married Marrion E. Platt on 26 September 1843 in Ashtabula County, Ohio. The 1850 census of the town of Wayne in Ashtabula County lists Chester, 31, living with his wife, Mary E., 26, Phebe, his mother, 64, his brother Arnold, 32, and two male children whose names are illegible, ages 5 (unknown) and 1 (probably Spencer). Later census records show Spencer and the two daughters listed below, so possibly the older boy died young. In 1900, Marion indicated that she had borne five children, three of whom were living.
Chester was a farmer in Wayne.
