Questions to Ask your DJ
Since the quality of entertainment at your event strongly affects the amount of fun your guests have while at the event, hiring a DJ (or any entertainer) can be stressful. We want to help. Below are a few examples of questions, you may want to ask a potential DJ when deciding whether or not to hire him or her.
Will my DJ play requests and discuss music ahead of time?
A versatile Disc Jockey will be willing to listen to your suggestions, provide feedback, and play from your desired song list. While planning an entire evening is not advisable (this does not allow the DJ to play to the crowd and do what he is good at), having an idea of what special songs or types of music you would like to hear is key to planning a successful event. We value communication because it makes our job easier. A professional Disc Jockey cannot know everything about your musical preferences and entertainment needs without good communication.
Do you use Professional Equipment?
I know this may sound silly, but you might be surprised. Ask whether your prospective Disc Jockey works with professional audio equipment. Home theatre systems and stereos aren't equipped to handle the stress of hours of high volume usage. Professional-grade equipment is. That's why we only use high quality professional sound and lighting equipment.
Does the Disc Jockey know the proper etiquette for your type of party?
A professional Disc Jockey will assist you with the planning of your special day. Most professional entertainers will have enough experience with your type of event to provide feedback and basic information about the planning of an event. While a DJ is not necessarily a wedding or party coordinator as well, he or she should be familiar with the type of event you are planning and able to answer questions or offer suggestions. Ask if they have experience with your type of event.
How much time do you allow for set-up?
Punctuality is a necessity. Most Disc Jockeys arrive at least one hour prior to the start time you've given them, but may require more time if the setup is more elaborate, or he or she is not as familiar with the location.
Do you provide a written contract?
It is extremely important to have your booking confirmed in writing. Ask for a written agreement. Any professional DJ will be able to provide a contract to guarantee the date and outline the services and price agreed upon. We offer a very easy to understand, basic contract which protects you and City Lights Entertainment. We generally request a $50 deposit to guarantee a date. If you are expecting a specific entertainer, make sure you get it in writing as well.
Will you be suitably dressed for our occasion?
Specify the type of apparel that your Disc Jockey is expected to wear for your occasion. If the occasion is less formal and a sweater and khaki pants or jeans is appropriate, let your entertainer know. If only a nice shirt and tie or suit is going to work, let him know. It is your event. You make the call.
