Hello Vernon City Council members, I would like to take the time to commend the city council for a very nice job done on the website for the city of Vernon. I always knew Dannie Kolmetz would amount to something, but wasn't sure what...just kidding Dannie...My name is Dwight L. Perkins, Sr., and I am a 1965 graduate of Vernon High...Spent four years Air Force (1965-69) am a Vietnam Era Veteran and now retired from General Motors Powertrain Division , Saginaw, Michigan...live outside Sterling, Michigan, and it is very nice to sit in the comfort of my home and view pictures and information concerning my hometown of Vernon...
Hello Anita...even though the attachment is in black and white, I think you may enjoy the pic...Left to right; Margaret Perkins, Annette Anderson, Dwight Perkins and Donna Perkins...it was 1957 and it snowed about two inches during the night...I had been sick for a few days, but when I seen the snow, I went outside into the fresh air and built the miniature "snowghost" shown in front of us...by 10:00am it was all gone...the three pictured with me are my sisters...we lived in the house, between and behind, Kendricks Grocery and the Feed store...the old house is still there, although I do believe it to be a different color now...it then was white, trimmed in blue...I was in the fifth grade and Mrs. Edell T. Brock was my teacher @ Vernon Elementary...Also, one night, we were awakened by a noise...my Dad, Jack Perkins (deceased 1987) was watching through our front door window, a burglary in process across the street @ Henry Brock's Gas Station...we did not have a phone, so my Dad went out the back door, and ran all the way to Police Chief Rodger's house to alert him...

I remember sitting on the front porch one day and watching two "grownups" with their front bumpers of their respective vehicles trying to push one another away from the gas pumps @ Brocks' gas station...boy, was the rubber burning that day...I also remember Coy Brock, Postmaster @ Vernon would ride his bicycle to the post office, lean it next to the building and go inside...later he would walk home, drive his car down to the PO, leave it running while he went inside, then come out, mount his bike and go home...car was still parked, running...?????? Sam Mitchell used to have an ice cream cooler outside the gym...he would sell ice cream bars to the kids...one day the electricity went off for quite some time and his ice cream started to get soft...he started giving all the kids ice cream sickles, bars, etc. He lost a lot of money that day, but "Big Sam" was known for his big heart...there are lots of stories that people probably didn't know of or maybe have forgotten...
I know my grandmother, Margaret Perkins, invented a new dance step one day when she went into her kitchen to get something from the old pie safe...she opened the door and there was a huge rattlesnake coiled up inside...didn't know the ole gal could move so fast...lol. My Grandfather, J. R. Perkins, used to walk three miles from his house to the Hinson Crossroads to cut hair under an old oak tree across from "Annie Mae's" store...he would go there mostly on Saturday to catch all the fishermen going to the Choctawhatchee river...Ernest Worthington, Sr. was our bus driver and was very good at his job as he never went into the ditch...one day it was raining and he had to drive up the clay hill where the "Pumping Station" for the pipeline now exists @ the Hinson Crossroads...the bus slipped a little and all us kids went to one side of the bus...you guessed it, Ernest wound up in the ditch...he later had a good laugh over it...the list just goes on and on...hope you have enjoyed the memo's...with hometown regards, Dwight

Technology has certainly come a long way since 1965...I noticed on one site, Vernon the Movie, could someone please provide more info on this...my family lived in Vernon in 1956-57, later returning to the Hinson Crossroads...I remember going to the theatre in Vernon years ago when Mr. Roache used to have the old movie house...everyone would really get shook up when the carbon rods burned down and the movie would go out...very nice pics concerning the schools and surroundings...Hopefully, I will be able to visit with you while I am down there for the Perkins Family Reunion to be held at Five Points Community Hall, October 12, 2002--Public is invited...I usually make a point of visiting Vernon...there are lots of memories and history of Vernon that lots of people are not aware of...thank you for such a nice website...now the people "up north" will be able to see that I didn't make up a "story" of where I'm from...God Bless...by the way, it is still : "One Nation under God"...and I'm proud to be an American...Dwight L. Perkins, Sr.
