Archibald Wadsworth (~1765 - 1856)

Of Moore Co., NC, and

Pike Co., GA

Archibald Wadsworth (~1765 - 1856)
Archibald Wadsworth was born about 1765. He appears in the 1790 US Census in Moore Co., NC  (living in Fayette District). He appears in the 1800 Census for Moore County along with Thomas Wadsworth, and Daniel Wadsworth. These three men appear to be close in age (26 - 45) and proximity.  He also appears in a list of Moore County land owners in 1815.  By 1825, he was living in Pike Co., GA.  He died in 1856 in Pike Co., GA and left a will there. He is buried at the Wadsworth-Clayton cemetery in Lamar Co., GA.

He was married to Clarissa (some sources give his wife as Nancy) Kenny (daughter of John Kenny?) about 1792 in Moore Co., NC.  Clarissa Kenny was born about 1774 in NC.  Archibald Wadsworth and Clarissa  Kenny had the following children:

2 i. Clarissa Wadsworth was born about 1793 in NC.  She was living in 1850 in Pike Co., GA.
+3 ii. John Wadsworth m. Nancy Wadsworth (first cousin)
+4 iii. Amy Wadsworth m. William S. Wadsworth (first cousin)
 +5 iv. Mary Wadsworth
 +6 v. Elizabeth Wadsworth

The Wadsworth-Clayton Cemetery (Source: Ruth Frances Aaron)

In 1825, Archibald Wadsworth acquired the property in Pike County, Georgia. The Wadsworth-Clayton Family Cemetery is located in Lamar County. It rests on a beautiful knoll beside a pond nor far from where the old home-place used to stand. All that's left of the house is the chimney, standing majestically as it did when it was built.

The cemetery lies under huge oak trees up on a hill over looking what was once a great plantation that was passed down through the Wadsworth family until around 1898 when it was sold.

During the early twentieth century, Lewis Graham and Franklin Gordy descecrated the old family burial ground by removing all the tombstones and using them to prop up the last old house on the property.

During the Civil War in September of 1863, a train loaded with supplies heading for the battle of Atlanta collided with a train loaded with wounded soldiers heading for the Confederate Hospital near Milner and Barnesville. Twenty of the solders died and were buried in the family cemetery. Also, many slaves were buried on the outskirt of the cemetery.

During World War II Mr. J. D. Moore and his wife walked up to the cemetery and counted more than one hundred forty graves.
