April 2000

On a Sunday afternoon in beautiful downtown Area51, I huddled down at my computer to talk with Cerrenes, a Community Leader with the Area 51 Federated Alliance of Community Leaders since November 1998. As we sat thousands of miles away, we clicked mice and keyboards to find out just what it is that makes this Massachusetts CL tick. The basics began to be revealed as I discovered that Cerrenes drives a BMW named Igor (pronounced Eye-gor as in the movie Young Frankenstein) and does not watch much TV since she considers the Internet far more entertaining. Her favourite colour is black, her favourite season is autumn, and favourite holiday is Samhain. On hot day, at 5’ 5”, she can stand in the shade of her 6’ 1” boyfriend. She speaks Spanish and German. She also talks to her dad alot about his computer.

As a relatively quick person, I soon noted that Cerrenes was not a clock, and realized that she doesn’t actually tick! I did, however, discover that she is also known as Astrias (to find out how she got this name, check out her website for the dream story), an accomplished computer geek and she shares her home with three computers and an unspecified man. Her favourite keystrokes are refresh and delete. Her only brush with fame comes in the form of a convenient brother-in-law who is an artist for X men comics.

Igor Some of the more fantastic details of this astute CL began to emerge as she admitted to having chameleon eyes and a self-professed goddess nature. She can feel for you, but watch out when those blue eyes start shading toward the pale blue. This is not to say that the lady is a wild- tempered hellion, just that her mood is reflected in the shade of blue in her eyes. Useful, I would think, as warning to the occasional foe, but a pain if you need to keep a secret! Since I also uncovered that Cerrenes is a bit of a perfectionist, she is often ‘ tested’ by the...sometimes less than perfect habits of her man…doubtless he has received one or two warnings from those eyes himself!

As she was enjoying the Karma album by Delerium as we ‘typed’, Cerrenes admitted that she enjoys all music with the exception of gospel. Having sorted out these essential details, we settled down to our interview.

“What do you think of women’s lib Cerrenes?”

“I think women’s lib actually hurts a lot of women’s causes. Too many people running around shouting ` Equality! Equality! , They don’t understand what equality they do have and ignore it. Not that women are totally equal.... There is still a long way to go yet. But, I don’t think the methods women’s libbers use will get us there any quicker. Education is the answer - it all starts in the home where children will emulate what they see. If they see adults supports racism or putting someone down for their beliefs, sex or sexual preference then they will grow up to teach their own children that. Intolerance in any form is not right and educating children early on is a big step in the right direction.”

The world changes almost daily these days and Cerrenes had this to say on the future of the Internet. “hm.. The Internet, my best friend.... hehe. . I think the government is going to end up entering this medium more than what is needed. I think that in certain instances we are going to lose certain granted freedoms. Freedom of speech is only a freedom if you defend it. One day it is gone, how do you get it back?”

So, Cerrenes, would you advocate that world governments stay out?

“I don’t think they do enough to help. They hurt the common public; while the rich get richer with tax breaks the poor get poorer. I think the same will happen in the cyberworld. The hackers would still be hacking and the regular users getting screwed. I am all for cyberpatrols to protect children but those same patrols also block witchcraft, gay and lesbian issues and art because it is deemed pornographic. Governments harm more than they help.”

I enjoyed my chat with Cerrenes she is a bright, intelligent young woman...and an asset to Area 51! As the day ended and we drove off into the sunset in our virtual cars, I waved to her dad, but I couldn’t help remembering that she was in a BMW and I...wasn’t! Gee, life seems so unfair sometimes!
