Here it is ladies and gents, the next story by the new-to-this-fiction-fandom-but-never-the-less-fantabulous plumtuckered. As the synopsis says, Sam, Teal'c, and a whole load of refugees set foot on another planet, only to discover Jack and Daniel aren't with them. The other two team members and another refugee find themselves somewhere which ISN'T Kansas, and isn't where they thought they'd be. Okay, at first blush it's not exactly an original concept. Back in the first season, "Solitudes" set the stage for Earth having more than one 'Gate, and if EARTH could have two, so could other places right? Then there's the "members of SG-1 captured and forced to work in a mine" plot, the "Daniel charms all the locals 'cause he's such a gosh-darn good guy" routine, and the "Jack's over-protectiveness of Daniel gets everyone into hot water" theme. Throw in a dash of alien afterlives, a pinch of a snakehead wanting Daniel's body (and who could blame him for THAT?), and big honkin' heap of Danny-whumping and you've got yourself one giant cliché, right? Not so, as plumtuckered proves in this very well-writen tale. Highs: Sam and Teal'c try to find Jack and Daniel, Jack and Daniel try to escape from a Goa'uld labor camp... but it's not that easy. Great characterization and rich details. Did I mention the Danny-whumping? Lows: Sometimes things seem a little hurried, when it sets itself up to have great cliffhangers between the chapters. Like so many fics in the hurt/comfort genre, it's also strong on hurt and shy on comfort. Final analysis: Meet Caleb and Adia, whose romance is the stuff of legends; Ren'auc, the proud Jaffa warrior who took a stand for her freedom; the cruel Balor from Irish mythology and his Evil Eye; Liam, who hasn't let captivity completely destroy his spirit; and Larry, Moe, and Curly, the big uglies who give everyone the heebie jeebies... great minor characters, all... and our heroes are in fine form, too! The ending doesn't RACE toward the finish line, but it does--unfortunately--cheat and throw in some 'happy juice' to keep the boys from getting too serious and *gasp* emotional at the end. Basically, it reads pretty much like an episode, only in black and white. Title: "The Evil Eye" *A 'page' by my reckoning is Arial 10pt with 1" margins. |
