Activists protest military ban on gays - Yahoo! News So... going into a combat zone with a gay man at your side is more dangerous than having a woman along, instead? Is a lesbian officer any more likely to hit on her female subordinates than a straight male officer in the same position? Sure, it might be a little uncomfortable changing in the locker room or barracks if you know someone in the room might find your nekked self attractive, but guys and girls--whether straight or otherwise--have always "noticed" the attributes of people of the same gender as themselves. Whether someone prefers the opposite gender or the same has absolutely no bearing on how he/she runs, climbs, shoots, fights, orders troops, talks to citizens, or translates indiginous languages. Most of the gays and lesbians who want to join the armed forces do so out of love of their country and honest desire to serve, and asking them to deny themselves intimate relations with the partner of their choice when their straight comrades-at-arms can talk about their own exploits 'til the cows come home is simply WRONG. Start it off by segregating the units--all-gay units from all-straight units--then work on integration exercises until everyone learns that gay and straight really aren't all that different from one another on the battlefield. Finally, drop the appellation "gay" entirely... the only time a person's orientation should be discussed is if it comes up in conversation between fellow soldiers or on forms requiring one to list a spouse. |
