DEDICATED hikers and less ambitious walkers alike are invited to take part in a long distance walk, the Cleveland Hike. The two-day North York Moors summer event offers a range of options to challenge the serious walkers or to merely offer fun for adventurous families. Children and adults of all ages are welcome to take part in the test of navigation. It is a team event and walkers can either enter it as a race, or take it on as a sponsored challenge to raise funds for good causes. Teams find their way between checkpoints using a map and compass. There is no marked route. At each checkpoint there will be a map grid reference, showing the next destination along the route teams will face a series of tasks ranging from general knowledge questions to Army assault courses and water obstacles to clear. Points will be awarded for each task. The end of the walk requires teams to put up their own tents and cook their evening meal. The next day follows the same format but the organizers will provide a meal. Awards will be made to the best team on that Sunday. Safety will be ensured with the North York search and rescue team and paramedics manning checkpoints. Anyone wanting to take part should be fit to walk 25 miles during the weekend and be able to read a six-figure map grid reference The weekend is on the 27th and 28th of June 2009 and anyone interested in taking part and wanting an information pack can contact us at
