Mountain Shelters on Crete
MOUNT PSILORITIS (IDI)
- "Prinos" 16-bunk hut at Prinos, 1100m. A 2-hour walk from the village of Ano Assites,
25km southwest of Iraklion. Iraklion EOS holds the keys.
- "Toumbotos Prinos" ("Sopata"). Situated on the west side of Mount Idi,
at an altitude of 1551m. Accessible by path from the villages of Kouroutes (5km dirt road
then another 5km from path),
Lohria (dirt road to the woods of Pardi 1500m from the hut), and Apodoulou.
50 beds.Rethymnon EOS holds the keys.
WHITE MOUNTAINS
- "Volikas" 35-bunk refuge at Volikas, 1360m. A 3-hour walk from Kambi village,
which lies 27km SE of Hania. The oldest of all mount refuges in Crete, built in 1958!
Hania EOS holds the keys.
- "Kallergi" 50-bed shelter at Kallergi, 1680m. 5 minutes by car (or 1 hour walk)
from Omalos Plateau, 41km South of Hania. Hania EOS holds the keys.
- "Tauris" The newest of all mountain shelters in Crete, this one on the Plateau of
Tauris (1200m) was as recently built as 1992! (Inaugurated Oct. 1992). It has 42 beds in several seperate rooms!
Accessible either by road (8km) or path (2 hours)
from Askyphou plateau, 39km South of Hania. Hania EOS is in charge.
- "Houliopoulos" ("Pahnon" or "Svourihtis") The smallest and most inaccessible
mountain shelter in Crete, lies next to the peak of Pahnes, the second highest point of Crete.
It took only 20 days -in Setember 1992- to built this tiny hut, the roof of which was carried up to these heights
(1970m), with the help of a choper!
The hut will have enough space to accomodate the first 25 people, that will climb up here
starting either from Anopolis (6 hours), or Amoutsera (3 hours), or Volikas hut (5 hours), or Kalergis hut (6

MOUNT DIKTI (LASSITHIOTIKA)
- Dikti's only mountain shelter, is situated to the west of Limnakaro plateau, at an altitude of 1350m, 1 hour 45' min from Agios Georgios (village on Lassithi Plateau). Once its contruction is completed there will be 15 beds. For more information contact the Lassithi EOS
