Oops, Gates gets it wrong

San Francisco - Bill Gates, regarded as one of
the world's brightest and richest, made a mistake. It was a small error,
but one that highlights the larger challenge behind his decision to spend
less time working for the massive company he founded 30 years ago.
On Tuesday, at Microsoft's annual shareholder
meeting, Gates told the audience that it would be his last meeting as
full-time chairman of the company. In fact, Gates will remain the sole
full-time chairman, but next year he will become a part-time employee. The
minor slip-up points to the challenge that Gates and Microsoft face.
Even though Microsoft has appointed well-known
names such as Ray Ozzie, Steve Ballmer, and Kevin Turner to fill Gates'
shoes, the company in essence faces the impossible. "The one thing you
can't replace, it would be impossible, is the revered status of the
founder of the company, who took something small and made it into the
biggest," said Jeff Parker, an analyst at Directions on Microsoft,
referring to Microsoft's status as the largest software company in the
world.
"He commanded irreplaceable respect among the
troops because he's that guy." People, especially those on Wall Street,

done a good job carefully plotting out Gates'
plan for transitioning his time away from the company and for new minds to
take over much of his work, Parker said.
Ozzie is expected to take on Gates' visionary
work, Ballmer is designated as the leader of the company's business
strategy, and Turner will run the sales organization.
"And so they don't replace Bill, but they kind
of shore up the big pieces of the company, so there's no void," Parker
said.
In 2006, Microsoft laid out Gates' plans,
saying that effective July 2008, he would transition out of his day-to-day
role in the company in order to spend more time with his charitable
foundation. After July, Gates will continue to serve as chairman and also
may advise on key projects. In fact, Gates' intentions were actually made
clear earlier than 2006.
In 2000, Gates took on the title of chief
software architect, handing over the CEO reins to Ballmer. That was around
the same time that he and his wife started the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation.
"There's not really any confusion," Parker
said. There's also nothing unique to the challenge that Microsoft faces.
"Succession is an age-old problem, going back to every king, queen, and
emperor," Parker noted. |

Monday night, 19 November 2007, as usual at
Trans 7 there was the talk show program of Empat Mata, or four eyes in
English, televised from half past nine to eleven o'clock. It is a talk
show with more humorous content than any other talk show on TV, most of
the answers by the guests were filled with jokes.
Usually every Monday night and Friday night the televised show were recorded shows, but that Monday night it was a live show. The guests that
night were a sensual model
Marlin Taroreh, a young TV star and singer Acha Septriasa, a young TV
actor Dimas Andrean, a famous singer Harvey Malaiholo and his wife.
Unlike with the other episodes, in this episode I stopped watching it when it was only half time of the program.
Because something really distracted my mind, related with Lady Diana and
you.
In that program the first guest Marlin was
wearing a mini and sitting in the coach while crossing her legs. It
reminded me with Lady Di's pose when she was interviewed by Martin Bashir,
containing her admitting a love affair with James Hewitt, that later on
triggered her divorce. And the third guest was Dimas Andrean, his first
name sound like containing the word Di, that inevitably reminding me with
Lady Di.
What distracted my mind was the fact that
Tropical Storm Noel appeared at almost the same time when the news of
Mukesh Ambani taking your position as the world richest occurred, and the
initial of Mukesh Ambani is M.A. that sounds like my aunt Emma
the wife of my uncle Noel.
Moreover, there was another news about your
slip of the tongue on Tuesday 13 November 2007 at Microsoft's annual
shareholder meeting, mentioning that it was your last meeting as
full-time chairman of the company. Such words usually mentioned by
someone who would pass away.
I wish that you will still live longer in this
world, so that you can still give your significant contribution to this
world. If all of a sudden you feel like getting closer to the end of your
life, like mentioned in my previous letter of "My
2,5 Term of Life and Your 2,5 Grant to Four High Schools", please feel
free to switch it to my self because since the beginning of these letters
I am the one who has the consent to move out of this world.
Even if in fact God has planned for your end
of life in the next two years, I wish it would be switched to my self, and
a wish can change a destiny.
