London
One bit of advice we did not follow was to take a map when going to
London. It's good advice. Our one day in the big city was fun
anyway. Our first stop was Leighton Hall, home of the painter Lord
Leighton, near Holland Park. After that we visited the Victoria and
Albert Museum. (More about those in the museums section.) We
went shopping in Harrods, and spent a lot of time ogling the tilework and
the food in the food halls. Finally, we took a long walk by the river,
along the Chelsea Embankment to Cheyne Walk, to see the former homes of
eminent writers and artists, particularly that of Dante Gabriel Rossetti
and Algernon Charles Swinburne. That was a thrill even though the
house is not all that impressive and we could only see the outside.
We had a nice relaxed dinner at a small Italian restaurant in Chelsea,
then walked back to the tube station to catch our train home to Tunbridge
Wells. Considering all that London has to offer, we didn't see much,
but one day in the city to fourteen in the countryside is about the right
ratio for us.
