When it comes to her style, Tamara Braun has two rules that she lives by.
1: Always wear comfortable clothes. "You look self-conscious and carry yourself differently if you don't," stresses Braun.
2: Don't skimp on accessories. "A good piece of carefully chosen jewelry can make an outfit," she insists.
Braun achieves her distinctive earthy look -- "I like things that resonate the same kind of vibrations that I do" -- by mixing current trends with classic pieces and sentimental
hand-me-downs from her mother and grandmother.
1) "I loved that top! It's an Anna Sui that I borrowed from the GH wardrobe department. I loved the print and the open back. It felt like a scarf, like I almost had nothing on. I wore it with Levi's. The necklace I'm wearing was my mother's, and I got the purse in Australia. I actually ripped it that night and was very upset."
2) "Perhaps a tank top would have been good -- you can see the outline of my bra! Lovely. The shoes are from Carly's closet and are Marc Jacobs. I love them. They're little pumps that look like they're from the '40s."
3) "This skirt is from Anthropologie. It's feminine without being too girly. I thought it was important to go simple on top, because of the tulle on the bottom of the skirt. So I picked this black spaghetti-strap tank. When I bought this top, it had a big flower above the left breast, which I promptly cut off. I've got both my grandmas' jewelry on in this picture -- one's ring and the other's necklace."
4) Braun labels this 2003 Daytime Emmy Awards ensemble -- Lloyd Klein gown with white topaz jewelry from Talisman -- her favorite. "I love it all! The dress has quite a plunging neckline, but not half as plunging as when I tried it on. It initially came down to just above my belly button. When I sat down, my breasts popped out. So we tacked it up to a safe place. I'm wearing two falls in my hair and false eye lashes."
5) "Here's that little black tank again, with a sweater coat I wear all the time. I bought that necklace -- it's South African agate on a brown piece of leather with silver studs all over it -- at this little store on Hillhurst Ave. in Los Feliz (a neighborhood in Los Angeles). The jeans are Golf Punk, and the belt is something I got on sale at Anthropologie. I threw it on, and it worked. I like the way the round circle of the necklace goes with the round circle on the belt. I think circles are feminine."
6) "I was at my friend's house getting ready for an event, but I didn't like what I brought over to wear. She pulled this top out of her closet for me to try on and I loved it, so she gave it to me. It falls nicely in the front, has a great neckline, and ties in the back. It's sexy, without being trashy, which is what I tend to go for. I have had this skirt for years. In fact, I wore it to my screen test with Maurice Benard (Sonny) for General Hospital. The shoes are $400 Charles Jourdan's that I got for $75, because the store was going out of business. They're houndstooth with these fabulous straps."
7) "Here we have Emmy outfit numero uno (2002). It's a blouse and a skirt by Eduardo Lucero. The top had a real Grecian goddess feel to it. It was unconventional, and I fell in love with it. The biggest nightmare about this outfit was finding sandals. I went shopping everywhere. Everyone kept telling me that I'd never be able to find any shoes. I was doing this promotional shoot for SOAPnet and I wore black strappy sandals with tiny rhinestones on them. I said, 'Do you have these in a winter white?' They did, and I bought them at the shoot. It was two days before I had to leave for the Emmys!"
8) "This was at my first GH fan-club event. This rust-colored, spaghetti-strap top has a drape-y neckline that you can either dress up or down. I paired it with Earl jeans and these big, old, clunkin', honkin' boots that I had forever. I lived in those boots until I wore them out. The earrings I'm wearing are big hoops that I wear on my wrists sometimes as bracelets, except I lost one recently at one of Maurice [Benard] and Paula's parties. Hey guys, if you find a big earring you can fit on your wrist, it's mine!"
9) "I wore this outfit to Michelle Stafford's (Phyllis, Y&R) Daytime Unites event after 9/11. I was doing the red, white, and blue thing.I figured, I'm white, the tank top is red, and the jeans and the shirt are blue. I've got on those old, honkin' boots, again."
10) "I am such a jeans girl. Here I am in Levi's again. The jacket is DKNY with a sporty stripe going down the sides of the sleeves. I liked it because it's casual, it's sporty, and you can dress it up. I wore it with an ultra-blue tank top underneath that matched the inside of the jacket."
11) "The pants are Rebecca Taylor, and I love the shirt. It's form-fitting and the cuffs give it a little flair. I bought the turquoise necklace I'm wearing that day. There was someone at the studio selling jewelry to our wardrobe department, and all the girls ran in to look at the stuff. That piece makes the outfit a little more funky."
