New Orleans frequently have their own way of saying things.
Here are some expressions that are used in the Crescent City

banquette(ban-KEHT):a sidewalk
bayou(BY-yoo):a small river or stream, usually marshy
beignet(bihn-YAY):a square, powdered doughnut
Cajun(KAY-juhn):a person descended from the French-Canadians who
who came to Louisiana in the late eighteen century
crawfish(or crayfish):a tasty shellfish that looks like a small lobster
Cresole(KREE-ohl):a person descended from early French ans Spanish settlers
gallerie:an outdoor balcony or porch
gris-gris(gree-gree):a voodoo charm that brings either good or bad Luck
krewe(kroo):a social club that sponsors Mardi Gras activities
