Mo to Houston could pay off in more ways than one
August 13

By: Ace

The recent rumors in regard to the possibility that Maurice Taylor (who played for the Clippers last season) might be coming to Houston has gotten Rocket fans talking like crazy.

We seem to have created a split camp, in which we find ourselves pondering whether the Rockets should consider signing him for our $2.5 mid- level exception.

I think we should get Maurice in a Rockets uniform at this point, but I would first like to make clear that it's not specifically because of his value as a player, but rather for what it could do to us in terms of cap space and free agents considering coming to Houston next summer.

These arguments assume that it's up to the Rockets to call it, as whether Maurice Taylor himself is considering the Rockets is another issue.

Why Mo?

1) We need some wins to attract free agents Naturally, the Rockets are currently in a rebuilding phase. The transition from the old to the new seems to have gone smoothly, and the cycle will be complete once Rockets legend retires after the upcoming season. However, this doesn't mean that we should tank and build through the lottery. After I saw what happened in this year's draft, I don't want to experience a losing season again. Neither do free agents such as Chris Webber. Being a seven year veteran, Webber is now looking for a winning team. He's looking for an improvement over Sacramento. Clearly, if we don't make the playoffs or at least make some kind of impression we won't be able to convince him. Specially with the likes of Miami having plenty of cap space for next season (imagine a team with Zo, Hardaway, Jones, Mason, and Chris Webber). Maurice could turn this team into a solid opponent for any Western Conference powerhouse.

2) He'll be fighting for his money Taylor now realizes that getting a fat contract in the NBA is not easy after all. Does he sign with the Rockets, he'll have to put his best game forward as so to convince other teams (or even our Rockets) into signing him. Sure, it shows something about his character, but who cares? I only want him for one season anyway. Why? First, it might give us that post presence we need to allow us to steal a playoff spot. I'd like to see one more playoff run before Hakeem retires. Secondly, this one excellent season he should be having would once again help us in convincing Webber or another free agent to sign with us.

3) Have I even mentioned Shandon Anderson? We take him for granted, but I don't see him sticking around do we experience another losing season. It's his option to bolt. Remember last season when he was complaining after that terrible start and lack of production on his part (which he blamed on the Rockets, not himself)? We need to keep this guy happy.

4) He is improving, believe it or not Maurice has improved both his rebounding and scoring numbers over the past three season. Considering that he is young and willing to play hard for a contract could be quite fruitful.

5) He's a friggin' bargain at $2.5 million Other teams would be salivating given such an opportunity. Some Seattle fan boards even prefer him over their own Vin Baker. Don't take this one for granted, Houston.

6) If he pans out, we might be able to keep him Taylor has been known to complain and not work hard, but he's still young and that might change. With the excellent staff we have within our organization, I'm sure the Rockets might be able to provide him with some sense. He will probably improve anyway as most players do one they get a bit of seasoning and experience. Otherwise, we just dump him. No problem. He would be a great option if a free agent like Webber doesn't decide to come our way.

7) What do we have to lose but (perhaps) a lottery position? I don't mind getting the lower pick, as I think teams can more easily be built around trades and free agents. As mentioned earlier, a playoff position, young players, and a bright future often bring in the big free agents. Do you really think he's such a bug cancer that we will ruin all team chemistry?

Naturally, if we can find that "Shandon- like" player Carrol Dawson mentioned for our Power Forward position, I'd opt for that one. Well, such a deal could be in the works right now but as I see it Maurice Taylor seems like the best option. Sure, he's not the best defender around nor is he a great rebounder, but he's the best out there. I sure as hell prefer him over Kenny Thomas any day.

Some say that he has a bad attitude, but I don't think he'll be too unhappy with Houston. The Rockets don't treat their players like garbage, nor did they draft a bust he can constantly complain about (see comments made on Michael Olowokandi). I actually feel sorry for him. He had to spend an excruciating part of his career with the Clippers. Not only do they suck, but they're not too good when it comes to giving their players the proper considerations.

I would give the go on this deal in a second, as I realize what type of opportunity this really is. It's not often that an up and coming young player signs for the exception on what is, in truth, a lottery team.
