COCA: THE CASTLE

Coca castle is unique as a castle, not only in Spain, but also throughout Europe. The castle is built of brick in the Mudejar style. There are many other brick-built castles in Europe that have no Arabic influence. However, Coca castle is special because brick was the material that the Mudejars used in their architecture and because Coca is the supreme example of the skills of these Moorish master-builders.

Coca castle is surrounded by a deep, wide moat over which there are two drawbridges. These provide entry to the outer courtyard that is set behind a curtain wall. The main part of the castle is the inner courtyard. This is square in layout and has polygonal towers at three corners of the square. At the fourth corner is the great square keep. The inner courtyard had classical columns supporting the arches but these were removed early in the 19C. The interior decoration was originally also of lavish Mudejar style but unfortunately little remains. Today the castle is being used as an educational institution for forestry studies.
