Course Description
The goal of this Anatomy and Physiology course is to have students become familiar with the structure and function of the human body. The course will begin with an overview of the levels of organization of the human body. The course will then move into studying specific systems of the body, including the integumentary, skeletal, digestive, urinary, respiratory, cardiovascular, and lymphatic systems. The course text is Hole's Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology.
Course Objectives
To develop general knowledge of the human body and its systems.
In the development of this knowledge the students will also:
* gain an appreciation for the levels of organization in the body.
* understand that the human body's structure is dependent on the functions of that part and vice versa.
* understand that the human body is constantly working to maintain homeostasis.
Lab Work
The major lab will be the dissection of a fetal pig at the end of the school year. This lab is a required part of the course. During the year there will be demonstration dissections of the heart and kidneys. The eye will also be dissected by students.
Grading
Assignments will be considered process or product grades. The process points will count for 35% of the class grade and the product points will count for 65% of the class grade. Process grades are assignments that are checked for completion but necessarily graded. Product grades are assignments that are graded on completion and correcteness. Tests, projects, and quizzes are considered product grades. During each marking period points will be accumulated from tests, quizzes, lab reports, class assignments, projects, and homework. Tests are a mix of multiple choice, fill-in's, true/false, short essays, and essays. Tests are given often in the 1st marking period. They will occur about once a week. As we move into actual systems the tests will be more spread apart but the number of announced quizzes will increase. Quizzes will generally be on diagrams or on class notes and reading assignments. The student can expect homework most nights. The homework will usually consist of reading and follow-up questions. Homework may or may not be checked or graded depending on the assignment. Even if the homework is not checked or graded it will be covered on tests and quizzes. Pop reading quizzes will also be given. There will be at least one major project per marking period.
Late Work
Late work will NOT be accepted unless the student has an excused absence. Each student will be given one late homework pass at the start of the year. The pass can be used ONCE. This is your "I left it home", or "my dog ate it", or "I forgot my book", etc.. Use it wisely. The pass does not mean you do not have to do the assignment. The assignment still must be completed and turned in. There will be a few opportunities to earn an extra pass during the year.
Absences
It is the student's responsibility to obtain assignments when absent. The student has as many days as they were out to make up the work. In other words if the student is out 2 days, she has 2 days to make the work up. If the student is absent the day of a test they should be prepared to take the test the day they return. The student can email the morning they are out and I can let the student know what we are covering in class that day. Work missed due to unexcused absences will not be accepted, however the student is responsible for the content covered on the days missed.
Expectations
All students will
- come prepared to class everyday. This means bringing the text and notebook and having homework out and ready to be checked at the start of the period.
- be on time. Every three tardy's will result in a detention and will count as an absence. (25 absences will result in automatic failure of the course. This is school policy!)
- respect the teacher and other student's property and opinions. In other words, if it is not yours don't touch it and if you don't have something nice to say than don't say anything at all.
- abide by lab safety rules. If rules are not followed a zero will be given on the lab and the student may not be permitted to take part in subsequent labs.
Materials
Each student should bring to class:
1) 3-ring binder 4) Dividers for binder
2) Text 5) Pencil or pen
3) Loose-leaf paper 6) Markers or colored pencilsEach student is asked to 'donate' a box of tissues or paper towels.
After and before school help
I am available before and after school for help. If help is needed please schedule a day and time. I usually am in the building by 7 a.m. at the latest so mornings are a good time to meet with me. You can also contact me by email, but I do not check my email at home everyday. (I do check my email at school a few times a day.)Click above to return to Mrs. Barrett's home page
