Convection demo without Potassium Permanganate

This is a good demo since it does not need chemicals and it  can be portable. The slight problem is that it needs reduced room illumination except if you used a very bright light source.

Basically you need a clear container such as small fish tank or unmarked 1 litre beaker. A 6V battery. Two leads and a 5 cm length of resistance wire. Demo fuse

All you are doing is heating the wire in the clear plastic tank. this will give convection currents which you can see as shadows on a screen if you shine a bright light through it.

A halogen bulb in a torch, a 12V halogen bulb and PSU or an OHP could all be used as light sources.
