Convection demo without Potassium Permanganate
This is a good demo since it does not need chemicals and it can be portable. The slight problem is that it needs reduced room illumination except if you used a very bright light source.
Basically you need a clear container such as small fish tank or unmarked
1 litre beaker. A 6V battery. Two leads and a 5 cm length of resistance wire.
All you are doing is heating the wire in the clear plastic tank. this will give convection currents which you can see as shadows on a screen if you shine a bright light through it.
A halogen bulb in a torch, a 12V halogen bulb and PSU or an OHP could all be used as light sources.
