The Christmas spirit was once again in our hearts
as Christmas carols filled the December air. As has
been the tradition for the past 19 years, the Mu
Lambda Fraternity and Sorority has successfully
sponsored the annual Christmas Carolfest, held on the
evening of December 16 at the UERM gym. The event had
5 participating chorale groups, 4 from the College of
Medicine (2001A, 2001B, 2000A and 2000B) and 1 from
the College of Physical Therapy.
Hosting the proceedings were Mu Lambda Grandmaster
Jomick T. Lumawig and Most Exalted Sister Ricah V.
Ramos. Brief opening remarks were given by Dr.
Vicente Tanseco, UERM hospital director and adviser
to Mu Lambda, after which the contest proper had gone
under way. Each chorale group was required to sing 2
songs, the contest piece, "Kumukutikutitap,"
and a song of their choosing.
Taking the trophy for the first place were the
students from the College of Physical Therapy with
their beautiful rendition of both the concert piece
and the song "Gloria, Gloria." Although the
last day of exams for the college was actually on the
same day as the event, their chorale group had
managed to find time to practice in recent weeks and
sharpen their vocal and performance skills to win the
competition. In the 1996 Christmas Carolfest, PT took
the 2nd place.
Taking 2nd and 3rd place this year were the groups
of 2000B and 2000A, respectively.
The annual presentation of the UERM lantern queen
candidates, traditionally held on the same night of
the Carolfest, did not push through this year as only
one candidate (Raquel Lim, 4th year PT) was present.
Apparently, the Phi Alpha Sigma Sorority (the
organization which handles the annual lantern queen
contest) had failed to inform the contestants of the
date of the presentation. 2 songs, intended as
serenades for the candidates were still sung: "Harana"
by Gio Barangan (Med 2001A), and "Each Day With
You" by Mike Manalang (Med 1998).
Womens' Volleyball
Tournament '97
After a one year absence, the annual Women's
Volleyball Tournament is back and is here to stay.
Sponsored by the Mu Lambda Sorority, this year's
competition was held from November 5 to 26, 1997 at
the UERM gym. 5 teams participated in the event (Med
2001, 2000A, 2000B, 1999 and PT). Games were held
after class hours and lasted 3 sets each during the
elimination rounds, in which each team contested
November 26 was the day of the championship match.
Both the PT and 2000B teams had a standing of 3 wins
and no losses. The final game was a best of five
competition in which the college of physical therapy
prevailed.
3 on 3 Basketball
Tournament '97
As has been the tradition in UERM, the Mu Lambda
Fraternity has once again sponsored the annual 3 on 3
basketball tournament. Held last November 18 at the
UERM gym, this one day event saw 16 teams vying for
the top prize of P1500. 8 teams were composed of
students from the college of PT, 7 teams from
Medicine and 1 team of UERM employees. The college of
Nursing was not represented in the tournament.
Games were played in a half court and lasted 15
minutes each in the first round and 8 minutes each in
the succeeding rounds. Teams consisted of a maximum
of 4 players (1 substitute). Amateur rules applied
and each player was allowed a maximum of only 4 fouls
per game.
Hustling and muscling their way to the top spot
was the employees' team of Mario F. Malindon (pathology
dept.), Rommel Aquino (property dept.), Rolly Cortez
(Security dept.) and Ben Quintas (Security dept.),
who easily eliminated the opposition. It was the
first time in the history of the competition that the
employees' team emerged as champions. Landing at 2nd
place was the team of the Ex Orbe Medicus.
Medical Missions
The various members of the Mu Lambda fraternity
and sorority actively participate in several medical
missions held in different areas. The more recent
ones were held in Pampanga, under the joint
sponsorship of the vice-governor and the Philippine
Medical Association. These projects give the members
the opportunity to offer their medical skills and
knowledge in service to others and at the same time
gain the experience necessary in becoming true
medical practitioners. Mu Lambda has also
participated in Batangas Medical Missions during the
summer of 1998.
