Writing this with 10 days left as a Military Judge...the Court will come to order.  First item of business...CONGRATULATIONS to THADMIRAL ALLEN on his 3rd star and command of LANTAREA and to RON SILVA for putting on his 2nd star!  They look GREAT on both of you...BRAVO ZULU.

Got a brief note the end of April from Trooper CARL SCHRAMM. "For the last 13 weeks or so I've been in a trial in - of all places - New Jersey. (If nothing else, it served to remind me why I don't want to live on the east coast.) And prior to getting stuck in Jersey, I got tied up hauling prisoners to Seattle and Arizona. At any rate, life is pretty much back to normal now, and I am once again back in lovely King Salmon, AK.  As soon as I get a chance, I'll send you that update on what I've been doing since my Coastie days. However, since I've endeavored to keep my life as uncomplicated as possible - no bills, no kids, no obligations - I suspect that it'll be pretty brief."  CARL, sounds like you need a roundtuit...and I know where you can get one. Brief (sounds like a lawyer word) or not, report around with that update!

DON ESTES changed his ISP and provided the following update with his new address: "My family had been looking at Huntsville for several years as a retirement location. My roots go back to the Birmingham area anyway, but the main reason was the dynamics of the city and some property we've owned on a lake near here for 20 years. When I retired in the summer of '98 it wasn't a question of where I would retire, but what I would be doing in Huntsville. I got a couple of offers from local companies and jumped in with both feet. I worked as a contractor supporting the Army's UH-60 Blackhawk as a systems engineer and technical consultant. It was a great job, but I was soon doing the 60-80 hours a week routine. I've recently jumped to a new company (7 of us) called Qtec Aerospace. We have gotten in on the ground floor of some excellent NASA opportunities. Things look excellent. JOAN is working part time as a Nurse - phone service. My son turned out to be much better in the academics than old Dad. He graduated from an excellent engineering school in 3 years, moved to DC to work in the IT business with an old CG friend (Matt used to baby sit for them in Elizabeth City). Tell me contacts don't payoff.  He was married in Feb to a wonderful young lady with a 3 year old son who could pass as my son's boy very easily. They live in Woodbridge, VA. but we're working on them. My daughter is 3 years younger and is attending UAH, living at home and doing all the stuff she almost missed by getting married too early....only lasted a year. We just had a new addition to the family...my mother-in-law. She's 93 but is as sharp as a tack. JOAN was born in the Congo as a missionary kid, so her mother has some incredible stories that she blesses us with each evening.  My running is finally slowing down....arthritis set in last summer and reduced my 6-8 mile runs pretty quickly. I'm also allergic to some medications so I have to endure some level of pain or become a druggy. Oh well, it was time to move on. Running was a special part of my life as it opened many doors for me along the way...since academics didn't.  We have my wife's perfect home.....I like it too. We start construction on a lake cabin this summer....and just because it's in Alabama doesn't mean it is a double wide....we got class too. I kinda like my neighbor's eight cars out front. I gotta Ford truck and working on a bass boat. Hey, maybe I'm done."  Au contraire DON...how 'bout names for the kids and a picture of that truck?

TOMMY CLARKE brags about daughter Wendy.  "She and Andy have each been offered assistantships (or whatever they're called) at the University of CT which include full tuition for graduate studies plus medical and a $15k+ annual stipend.  He's also received a similar offer from Western Michigan.  They are still waiting to hear from a few other schools before making a decision, but of course her grandparents as well as SUSI and I would vote for UCONN (if we had a vote!).  In any case, looks like they will be set for graduate school and not be moving in with us - that's the bottom line!"  Wendy and Andy returned from their two year Peace Corps teaching assignment in Arsenyev, a town about 300 km northeast of Vladivostok, on Father's Day.  Congratulations to them on their graduate assignments and a BRAVO ZULU and THANKS to them on their Peace Corp efforts!

PETE TEBEAU's been SWABO'd into helping CHUCK with our 30th Reunion plans.  ACID provides this update: "Today finds me very much enjoying life after Coast Guard. I'm headed across Long Island Sound on the Port Jeff Ferry to attend a meeting on water quality monitoring in the Sound. Professionally I wear two hats these days. One as a research associate with the University of Connecticut developing and coordinating various marine science and technology projects and initiatives. I am also working with Potomac Management Group, Inc., a management consulting company based in Alexandria, VA, which does a good deal of work for the Coast Guard. Other CGA grads at PMG include Steve Osmer, Doug Perkins and Paul Barger. Much of what I do for them can be described as maritime strategic planning and policy analysis, mostly in the marine safety and marine environmental protection fields. Both these jobs are keeping me pretty busy for the moment - if this is retirement it's hard to recognize it.  As for future career, I am trying to change course a little and get into teaching as a marine educator. I think this would be a neat thing to do (an honorable profession in my declining years) and give me a chance to use all of the marine science and marine policy education that my fellow taxpayers have paid for. I think I'd like to teach at the community college or high school level and maybe coach rowing or something on the side.  There have been dramatic changes in my digs over the past year. I've downsized my holdings from a 2200 sq. ft. house with three acres to a sailboat and a storage locker. I spent the winter in a rental down at the beach but will probably spend the summer on the boat, and then back in the rental again when the weather turns cold. I'm very much enjoying the freedom from having to maintain all that infrastructure.  As for my kids, they're pretty much up and on their own. Gayle works for the telephone company in New London, but will probably go back to school in nursing or medical administration at some point. Mike joined the Army and is training with the 81st Armor Regiment at Fort Knox. I think this is great for him as he needs a lot of structure to get started in life. He now has a career counselor, appointments secretary and personal fitness coach - all the same person. I'm looking forward to seeing him in two weeks during Family Weekend at Fort Knox - should be quite a transformation.  NANCY and I are still an item. She still has the antique shop in Stonington. Last summer we headed off to Glacier National Park and the Pacific Northwest for a week. This winter we hope to get back down to the Caribbean for a sailing trip. We also get out to San Francisco occasionally where her daughter lives and check up on JON ROSSELLE. As you know I also made it down to Tuscon to apprehend LOOMIS (still waiting for my bounty check). I may even get up to the Pacific Northwest again this summer, if so I'll try to stop by."  PETE, why not last summer?  No excuse, Sir!

Speaking of JON ROSSELLE...Belay that, a last minute update from ACID.  "Just got back from the "Saving Private Tebeau" mission at Fort Knox. It was Family Weekend and we were able to spring him on a 48 hour pass along with one of his buddies. Many flashbacks from Swab Year. Mike is 20 years old now. He has six more weeks of Armor Crewman training to go and then he'll get some leave. After that, it's off to Korea for his first duty station.  Gayle will be 23 in July. NANCY is long-term sweetheart for a number of years. I suspect we could be married but I'm not sure she (or anybody else for that matter) could live with me at this point. However, we do get along well together as she is clearly my best friend in the whole world at this point."

There were a few retirements in June, and CHUCK KING may be our ideal networking POC.  CHUCK joined Korn/Ferry International, the world's largest executive recruiting firm on the 1st of February. "I lead their Global Board Services Practice. The Practice recruits directors for the boards of major public companies throughout the US and internationally, with clients like ExxonMobil, DaimlerChrysler, RJR Nabisco, Radio Shack, Aetna and many more. I have been doing this work for the past 7 years with a smaller firm, and was subsequently recruited to join the 'big boys'. Great job and the business is going well."  CHUCK, where to we send those resumes?

BOB and AMY TABOR are enjoying the empty nest to some extent after years of little league, car pools, etc.  AMY sent a note after reading the June edition: "Now that I'm online I guess I should update you on the Tabor family.  Bob worked in Manhattan for 17 years in the garment industry with my Dad and then several years ago joined me in operating the two Mail Boxes Etc. stores that we own on Long Island.  Lots of long hours but its been fun building something from the beginning together.  We have three children.  Our daughter Kory graduated from Conn and is now living in Madison, WI working for Goodwill Industries as a counselor in a group home.  She's engaged and will be married Mother's Day 2002.  Scott is a junior at Pace University in NYC working on a degree in computer information systems.  Our youngest, Adam, just graduated from boarding school and will start at Conn in the fall. We'll be able to visit him and attend the reunion at the same time. See everyone in September!"

BOB GONOR made it out to Seattle for a short business trip just before MARY JANE and I left for our European vacation.  He and CHERI are enjoying living in Atlanta and even more so now that Ally and family are moving there from NJ.

Carl, Mary Jane, & Bob

Europe? GREAT vacation...we took a 14 day river cruise from Budapest up the Danube and down the Rhine to Amsterdam and then took the train to Paris for 3 days.  We were bumped up to 1st Class for the flight across the pond...16 of 17 days with blue skies and sunshine...a full moon over the Eyeful of Tower...OUTSTANDING.  We highly recommend Viking River Cruises <http://www.vikingrivers.com/usa/pages/homeset.html>.

SUTTER FOX had a small private retirement ceremony from his CINCPAC Liaison assignment without a lot of hoopla.  But proud daughter Laurel reports that our Navy brothers and sisters recognized his efforts and contributions by awarding the Defense Superior Service Medal!  Well done Sutter... and CONGRATULATIONS.  Laurel also sent along a great Fox Family Foto taken at brother Darryl's graduation from USC...the one in California...with a BA in Cinema-Television, Critical Studies. The Fox retirement plans?  Current thinking is to remain in Hawaii, but to spend the summer in LA.

Darryl Fox Graduation

Wait a minute...go back about 5 paragraphs...did JON ROSSELLE finally report around?  Sure did, with this update:  "With the exception of two brief relocations, I have been living in the San Francisco Bay Area since my transfer from CGC Spencer to the Twelfth District in early 1974.  While the requirements of the past 25 years have led to considerable travel, I have always found it a pleasure returning to San Francisco.  After leaving the Coast Guard in late 1976, I remained involved in the maritime industry, most recently serving as Senior Vice President, Matson Terminals, Inc. and I am now currently with SSA Terminals.  This on-going involvement in maritime has fortunately furthered the opportunity to re-encounter several past Academy and Coast Guard friends.  KATHY and I are approaching our twentieth anniversary, and our daughter Kimberly will start her junior year in high school this fall.  Kim is an absolute delight who wisely chose her mother to be her parental role model."  JON, how 'bout a photo  on your 20th?

Before we adjourn, CHUCK BECK reports that he, PETE TEBEAU, and PETE BARRETT attended a Homecoming 2001 meeting at CGA on 13 June. The chance for the three of them to get together and resolve some of the issues was very valuable.  CHUCK sent out a detailed E-mail the middle of June...hopefully you've already made your reservations...but here are the major points.  We'll hold a Friday evening class meeting and memorial service as opposed to attending the all class memorial on Sunday. TERRY ROBERTS has agreed to lead the service.  PETE BARRETT wants to have a "reception" on his boat which will be moored at CGA for the homecoming weekend on Friday night after the class meeting.  An outside caterer will provide wrap sandwiches for the pregame tailgate at about $8.50/person.  EVERYBODY is responsible for ordering and purchasing your own tickets for the game and the post game cocktail party.  The June issue of  Alumni Bulletin has the order form on page 13 and it's also in this issue. We have a block of rooms (40) reserved at the Groton Inn & Suites [(800) 452-2191] located at Route 184 and I-95 in Groton, CT. There is a two night minimum at $98/night so you have to book the room for both Friday 28 September and Saturday 29 September.  Make your own reservations on your own credit card ASAP but no latter than 15 August.  Tell the reservationist that you are part of the USCG Class of 71.  We'll go with the buffet dinner Saturday night. CHUCK and PETE are working on those particulars, as well as getting some photos of the two types of jackets available through the Cadet Exchange/Bookstore.  By the time you read this, you've already received follow-on E-mails with the ordering details...but only if you've reported around with an address like JON just did.  We've got 114 Classmates on-line...thirty some still missing in action. Check our list at <http://www.oocities.org/CollegePark/Campus/7184/classmates.html> against your address books and Christmas card lists.  We're adjourned, waiting on our Classmates, Sir!
