| The following text is an excerpt from 1997's
edition of A Guide for New International
Students, a booklet the University of
Strathclyde published to provide foreign students with the information
the university advisors were afraid we could be lacking of: "ALCOHOL: Many people in Britain drink alcohol as a means of relaxation and when socialising. It may not be allowed by your religion or you may not have tried it before. Do not feel compelled to join in. Non-alcoholoic drinks are always available in bars, restaurants and other public places. Bars and pubs are popular places in this country for people to meet and socialise in, wether or not they actually drink alcohol. If you do drink alcohol, then drink in moderation. Alcohol has particularly strong effects on people not used to drinking it. Never drink alcohol before driving - this is an extremely dangerous practice and you will be prosecuted if stopped by the police and found to be driving whilst under the influence of alcohol and drugs". |
