Much more than we wanted to know from the Frog-Meister,
but here's his rant, "Kath is still working for United Airlines, which
enables her to indulge in her new avocation - trekking in faraway places.
She just got back from Ladakh, India, having climbed a 20,000 ft. peak
in the Himalayas. It must have been fun, because she is smiling in
the attached picture (or is that just frozen on). She also had an
"exciting" time leaving the place. After enduring a mini-riot at
the airport in Ladakh and seven days of cancelled flights, she took a 260
ile Jeep ride over the Himalayas on an unpaved road to the airport in Kashmir.
They had to drive at night without lights to sneak by the separatists;
even so rockets, fired from Pakistan, passed overhead, and the bus in front
of them was hit by bullets. I am working for RW as a network consultant,
supporting the Defense Manpower Data Center, in the Monterey Bay area.
"Network" is a broad term as I have been directing the migration of the
desktops and some servers to Windows NT, as well as working on network
design, implementation, and security. My recreation is a bit more
mundane than Kath's - golf, although sometimes I wonder why. My handicap
went up after attending golf school. The Mommy & Daddy scholarships
are completed! Our youngest, Matt, just graduated from UC Santa Cruz
with a BS in Physics. He is planning to join the Peace Corps.
Kit, the eldest, finished his MBA at the University of Florida this summer
. He is a Portfolio Manager for Avalon-Bay Properties, managing five large
properties in the Virginia suburbs of DC. Our daughter, Robyn, is in her
third year of the Ph.D. program in Physics, at UC Berkeley. Through
fellowships and grants, she is self-supporting. She spent most of the summer
working on an experiment, sent up on a balloon, that traveled almost all
the way around the world in the polar regions.
More from the Lord-is-Good Department, John
Felton reports "Jo is doing great. Treatment all finished and
she is regaining her strength
(and hair). She is starting to get out and is enjoying
life again. We just got back from a trip to San Francisco to visit
our daughters and their husbands. Her first trip since the treatment
began more than a year ago."
Wedding in the
Faucher family: Catherine Anne Faucher, daughter of Bob and Mary
Lou, was married to Daniel McBrayer on July 25th in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Also in attendance from Charlie Golf were: Paul and Tina Flood, and Paul
reportedly taught his daughters Katie and Sarah how to celebrate "Cadet
Liberty Call style"; Leo and Anne Marie Morehouse made the trek from Atlanta,
and Leo was specially well-behaved; and Bob and Jeanie Walker '65,
rounded out the Coastie attendees. Catherine and Dan are residing
in
Augusta, Georgia, where Dan is a medical student and
Catherine is a telecommuter for a software company in Brentwood, Tennessee.
Bob and Mary Lou are recuperating and looking forward to celebrating other
CGA '66 weddings in the near future.
From Harvey Knuth,
news from the land of midnight gold: "Well, we have our first wedding
under our belt! Anna married David Whitfield on August 21st, here
in Juneau. It was, truly, a wonderful experience. My brother
and his family from CT visited for the first time, Dottie's sister and
brother-in-law from SC came for their second visit, and their daughter
and her husband, from NC, visited also for the first time. The the bride,
the maid of honor (bride's twin, Ami), and MOTB, were beautiful; in fact,
the entire wedding was beautiful, and the reception was the best party
I've been to in a while (if I don't say so myself)! Dave and Anna are living
in Edmonds, WA. Dave is with a small company in Seattle, doing graphic
designing; Anna is a customer relations rep with Air Touch Cellular,
in Bellevue.
Praise the Lord! Winnie
continues to gain altitude, advising "I have received a clean bill of health
from my original squamus cell throat cancer. I never had to have
Chemo; just radiation for 6 weeks after the radical neck resection removing
a tumor and a third of my lower tongue. The biopsies of the 39 lymph
nodes removed reveaked an unrelated papilliary cancer of the thyroid; both
surgeons at UCLA and Mayo and both radiation oncologists concur the cancer
could not survive the massive amounts of radiation received. But
both thyroid dudes say if there is cancer of the thyroid we remove the
thyroid......So I am monitoring same for a few more months before I make
a decision. I've been flying regularly since June 12 and have made
three trips to Europe, four to Hawaii and several CONUS flights.
Once again, thanks to all for prayers and well wishes - Winnie sends"
Hey, remember John Howard,
left us 3rd class year?!? Well, he was recently in touch with Bob
Byrd via the net and says "After I left the academy in May 1964, I attended
and graduated from U of Michigan in April 66 with degree in Mathematics/Computer
Science. Initially went to work for IBM as programmer and was slated
to go to Houston to work on Apollo project, but my local draft board stepped
in. I opted to enlist to guarantee OCS, and graduated from Infantry
OCS in Nov 67. Was fortunate to get a branch transfer to military
Intelligence and serve as an ADP Plans & Operations Officer at the
Hqs of US Army Security Agency in Arlington, VA.
>Once that tour was completed, I declined trip to Nam
and returned to civilian life in the Midwest. Have ended up in Chicago
suburbs with my owntax/accounting practice which I augment by providing
telephone technical support on subcontract basis for CA based accounting/manufacturing
software."
From Dennis
Shaw: I thought I would jot a few notes about my recently
completed Spring Break 98 tour. In between visits to my older
son Matt in Atlanta and my brother Dan in Cincinnati, I made the swing
thru Tennessee for short but very pleasant visits with both Ron
Carboneand Pat in Johnson City and Stephen and Susan in Knoxville.
This is probably not news to you, Ned, since I believe you have kept
in touch with both, but Ron is CFO for an outfit which makes water heaters
and is owned by an Australian company which also produces some excellent
wines. While I was there, they found out that their oldest, Tony, was just
accepted to Harvard Business School. From actory floor to Harvard
MBA in 3 generations- not bad.
Stephen
(not Steve) Anthony is doing good work as the Director of Oasis,
an Institute for Mind/Body Healing. I got the grand tour of Knoxville,
which is a truly beautiful city with small town charm and big city amenities.
All were great hosts- Pat even made veggies the way I like and Susan gave
me the run of the house! What great ties we have as 66ers- I had my Running
Light with me, and both passed (using the curve) a retention exam on How's
the Cow and the Cadet Oath, etc.
Hey, guess who we just heard from, Jim
Leskinovitch sorry, no email address,
but you can write him at 2131 Mt. Pleasant Rd., Port Angeles, WA 98362,
or send Webmeister an email and I'll give you his phone number. He's
recently remarried, doing super, working as an arbitrator the the National
Asso. of Security Dealers, and was just elected as a Commissioner of Hospital
district No. 2 in Callam County Washington.
Ozzie : “I've made
a speedy recovery since my mitral valve repair on February 11, 1998 ...
I've been fitness walking about six miles per day, and the doc just said
I can start mountain biking and swinging a golf club in a week or two.
Jane and I have planned our flyfishing tour of the west for this summer,
and we're going to start with a trip to the eastern Sierra mountain trout
streams in early May. Idaho bootcamp on July 6th is a definite go. I thank
everyone for the cards and E-mail following the surgery.”
Don Winchesterlately
known as “chemo-sabe”, should be through with his chemo by the time you
are reading this. Last I heard he was reporting plans for a
rehab period to regain the strength lost in his lef t shoulder, neck and
back due to the surgery. He said heanticipates regaining his
FAA medical around the third week of April and after a recurrent training
period in the simulator for ground school and emergency procedures should
be Bravo Zero around the first of May. Keep him and Kitty in your
prayers
From Doug Crowell
(Hey, he's landed on his feet)! started a new job January 5th.
Got it through the ewspaper instead of networking like I was supposed to.
The company is TRW. This puts my
"warmonger" expertise to work with the Navy on their
LPD 17 ship project as a Systems Engineer. The actual job involves
testing and evaluating the ship from detailed design (where we are now)
through fleet introduction (4 or 5 years from now). With a little
luck, this project will last until 2010 with the follow-on ships!
The work is in Avondale, Louisiana (just a short trip from my homestead).
On the personal side, both my sons are awaiting their first children (due
February and June), Grandchildren numbers 5 and 6. All of a sudden
things are looking pretty good for the new year!
