Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated was founded on January 16,1920 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. as the sister organization to Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Five women chose not to embrace the tenets of established black sororities and chartered Zeta Phi Beta Sorority to encourage the highest standards of scholarship through scientific,literary,cultural and educational programs; promote service projects on college campuses and in the community; foster sisterhood; and exemplify the ideal of Finer Womanhood. A private nonprofit organization, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is incorporated in Washington,D.C. and in the state of Illinois.
Zeta Phi Beta's purpose is to foster the ideals of service,charity,scholarship,civic and cultural endeavors,sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood. These ideals are reflected in the sorority's national programs for which its members and auxiliary groups provide untotaled hours of voluntary service to staff community outreach programs, fund scholarships, support organized charities and promote legislation for social and civic change.
The members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority are its most valuable asset. They are 75,000 predominantly African-American, educated women,collegiate and graduate, who are active in 500 chapters located on college campuses, in cities throughout 39 states and the District of Columbia, the Virgin and Bahama Islands, West Germany, and West Africa.
No conclusion can be written to this beginning. As Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,Incorporated approaches its seventh decade, it is still growing. Geographically, membership totals are on the rise as the organiztion continues to meet the personal and professional needs of contemporary women. The ideals and objectives of the sorority continues to remain applicable and adaptable to the ever-changing needs of people in today's world. The sorority continues to attract and produce women who are leaders and catalysts for change in their communities. As the twenty-first century nears, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc is designing new strategies to meet the challenges of the future.
