Review removes a goal by Kluivert
By Jose Alfredo Flores
Patrick Kluivert was denied a European Championship record Monday when officials disallowed one of his four goals for the Netherlands on Sunday in a 6-1 rout of Yugoslavia. European soccer's governing body, UEFA, said Kluivert's goal in the 51st minute was tapped into the net by Yugoslav defender Dejan Govedarica. Instead of being credited with the greatest individual scoring display in tournament history, Kluivert becomes the fifth player to score three goals in a European Championship game. ''(He) did not, after all, make history,'' UEFA said. Said Kluivert, ''Honestly, I have to say the defender touched it after me.'' MLS notes: Kansas City Wizards goalkeeper Tony Meola, who registered two shutouts to break the MLS record for shutouts in a season, was named the league's player of the week. Meola, also MLS player of the month for May and the league's career shutouts leader with 33, blanked the Dallas Burn on Wednesday and the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday for his 11th and 12th shutouts of the season. That allowed him to tie and then break the previous mark of 11. . . . Unbeaten at home but winless on the road, the San Jose Earthquakes (4-7-6, 18 points, fourth in Major League Soccer's Western Division) look to change the latter during a two-game road trip. They take on the MetroStars on Wednesday and Columbus on Saturday. San Jose extended its league-record home unbeaten streak to 14 matches with two ties last week. . . . With the 2001 season nine months away for the Colorado Rapids, MLS still doesn't know where the team will play its home games. Mile High Stadium, the Rapids' home, will be demolished after the Denver Broncos finish the upcoming NFL season. The Rapids do not have an agreement yet to play in the Broncos' new facility, which is under construction.
