Democracy
Must be Learned by Each Generation
The Wisconsin YMCA Youth In Government Program (YIG)
was designed to enhance development of the American democratic process
by enabling young people to prepare for political and moral leadership
through participatory training in the theory and practice of the Wisconsin
State Government. The program consists of seven to eight months of
learning the legislative process, writing and researching bills, participating
in pre government elections and ends with a state-wide model government
session in Madison at the capital building in Spring. The model government
has three branches, the House, the Senate, and a Judicial branch.
The model governmental bodies elect a Governor and Lieutenant Governor,
a Secretary of State, a Senate President, a Speaker of the Assembly, a
Chief Justice, an Attorney General, senate and assembly floor leaders,
reading clerks, sergeants-at-arms, and an Editor-in-Cheif of the model
government newspaper. The entire weekend is run as close as possible
to actual governmental proceedings.
This page has been set up to help those interested in Youth In Government,
or those who are new to the program understand the program and its proceedings
better. Below are links to various information pages on YIG.
