There are two major types of networks: peer-to-peer and server based.
In peer-to-peer networks each computer can act as both a client and a server. Peer-to-peer networks make sharing data and peripherals easy for small groups of people. Consistent, extensive security is difficult in a peer-to-peer environment because administration is not centralized.
Server-based networks are best for networks sharing many resources and data. An administrator oversees operation of the network and ensures that security is maintained. This type of network can have one or more servers, depending on the volume of traffic, number of peripherals, and so on. For example, there may need to be a print server, a communications server, and a database server all on the same network.
There are combination networks which have features of both peer-to-peer and server-based networks. This type of network is the most commonly used, but requires extensive planning and training for maximum productivity.
