Thornlea Secondary School is housed in a facility that was built in 1968 and is on Bayview Avenue in Thornhill. Since Thornlea opened in 1968 we have taken pride in developing innovative approaches to helping students achieve academic excellence in a collaborative, student-centered environment. We at Thornlea are commited to developing within each student the attitudes, knowledge and skills needed to be a contributing and responsible participant in a changing Canadian society. We are very proud of our students and we intend to continue are efforts to provide a learning environment for all students which will prepare them for their future. Out commitement to maintaining a varied and stimulating educational environment is based on the following Mission Statement:
We collaborate and seek innovative approaches to learning and personal growth. We are involved in dialogue about our changing natural, social and technological environments. We work towards a better understanding of ourselves and others.
Thornlea draws students from an area bordered by Highway Seven on the north, and Steeles Avenue on the south. The area has a very high density population and therefore the number of students at Thornlea is always high. At present, the school holds about 2200 students. About 400 students are bussed into Thornlea each day.
One strength of Thornlea is its multicultural nature. There are at least 22 language groups represented at Thornlea and as many cultures. About 10% of our student body is made up of students relatively new to Canada for whom English is a second language. We offer a comprehensive program to help these students in learning to use English effectively in both academic and practical settings.
